Mr. Puckett, probably the oldest man in Clarke county, died Sunday after a long illness. He was 96 years old. James Rufus Puckett, son of John Mathes and Mary Puckett, was born near Richmond, Virginia, March 16, 1847 and departed this life on January 2, 1944, aged 96 years, 9 months and 16 days. When only 15 years old, he left his home in Virginia and walked through the wilderness of forest until he came to Illinois where he settled near Tuscola, securing work as a farm hand until he had established himself as a farmer. Here he married Lydia M. Smithson on September 8, 1869. They lived in Illinois until 1892 when the family moved to Clarke county [Iowa], in the Groveland neighborhood. For the next ten years they lived there and then moved to Brookfield, Missouri. A year later they came back to this county where he continued to live for the rest of his life. Mrs. Puckett preceded him in death 30 years ago, passing away on March 15, 1914. A son, Walter, gave his life for his country, passing away in France during the first World War. Surviving are six children, Mrs. Josie Hollowell of Farmer City, Illinois, Miss Millie Puckett of Osceola who has been her father's constant companion for many years; Mrs. Myrtle Nelson of Davenport; Mrs. Miriam Cassity of Purdin, Missouri; John M. Puckett of Bozeman, Montana, and Mrs. Edith Wilson of Osceola. Also surviving are 17 grand- children, 13 great grandchildren, one brother Henry Puckett of Kinkman, Indiana and many other relatives and friends. He was a member of the Methodist church for over 75 years, taking an active part in Sunday school and church work as long as health would permit.
