Description	:	James R. Burgess Sr., 85, of Beaverton, Michigan passed away at his home on Wednesday, June 18, 2014. He was born in Beaverton on May 5, 1929, the son of Ransom W. and Loa Ellen (Ogg) Burgess. James graduated from Beaverton High School, Class of 1947, and then married the love of his life, Bonnie Belle Graves on June 12, 1949. Read More	James R. Burgess Sr., 85, of Beaverton, Michigan passed away at his home on Wednesday, June 18, 2014. He was born in Beaverton on May 5, 1929, the son of Ransom W. and Loa Ellen (Ogg) Burgess. James graduated from Beaverton High School, Class of 1947, and then married the love of his life, Bonnie Belle Graves on June 12, 1949. Jim was raised working in his parents General Store in Beaverton, and later went on to become meat manager at the IGA stores in Alma and Edenville until 1956 when he took a job at Dow Corning, as a Lab Technician and Quality Control, retiring in 1989. Jim also enjoyed his community and served as City Councilman for Ward 2 and Mayor pro-tem for 16 years, retiring from city services in 1991. Jim enjoyed working with young people, organizing the Science Quiz Program for the Beaverton and Gladwin Schools for competition. Jim was a member of the Beaverton Church of the Nazarene, having served on the Church Board as Sunday School Superintendent and Greeter among many other duties. He enjoyed playing softball and attending sporting events watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jim and Bonnie enjoyed winters in sunny Florida for many years. He leaves his loving wife, Bonnie Burgess of 65 years to cherish his memory. Also surviving him is James Jr. (Kathy) Burgess of Beaverton; John (Laura) Burgess of Beaverton; Janet (Phil) Bates of Corunna; 17 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; sister: Ada Ruth Davis Frick of Beaverton; sisters in-law: Jane Burgess of Mansfield, Texas; Betty Mavis of Beaverton; Beverly Torrez also of Beaverton; brothers in-law: William (Sharon) Graves of St. Helen; Gary Atkinson of Beaverton and many dear nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents: Ransom and Loa Ellen Burgess; brother: Kenneth Burgess; nephew: William Davis; sister in-law: Ruthie Atkinson. Those wishing to send an expression of sympathy in lieu of flowers are asked to consider the Beaverton Church of the Nazarene or Mid Michigan Home Care (Hospice). Funeral Services were conducted by Rev. Martin Hodge on Saturday, June 21, 2014, 2 p.m., with visitation beginning at 1 p.m. at Beaverton Church of the Nazarene, Beaverton, Michigan. The family received friends on Friday, June 20, 2014 from 2-8 p.m. at Hall-Kokotovich Funeral Home, Beaverton, Michigan. He was laid to rest at Beaverton City Cemetery, Beaverton, Michigan.
