Ferndale Enterprise [Ferndale, Humboldt County, California] Obituary - Last Saturday afternoon the remains of the late James R. Delesaux, of Port Kenyon, who breathed his last at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jas [James] T. Robarts in North Ferndale on Thursday, May 5th were laid to rest in our silent city of the dead alongside those of his departed wife, who passed over the mysterious river some 15 years ago. The funeral took place from the Congregational church, the Rev. G.W. Burris officiating, and Messrs A. Berding, P. I. Donnelly [Patrick J. Donnelley is correct, Find A Grave memorial # 134105652], Chas [Charles] Harkins, Richard Johnston, James Smith and Wm [William] Samuels served as pallbearers. Deceased was an uncle to Wm [William] H. [Robarts], Jas [James] T. [Robarts] and Robert W. Robarts, of Ferndale, Geo [George] W. Cooper, of Alton and Henry D. Davis, of Scotia, a brother-in-law to H. S. Case and Henry Davis, Sr, and father to Horace Delesaux of Hydesville, and Percy J. Delesaux of Port Kenyon. He was born in Canterbury, Kent County, England, on Jan 16th 1822 and came to California in 1850 having been a resident of Humboldt county for nearly 48 years. He returned to England in 1870, where he married Ms. [Caroline Frances] Fletcher, bringing her back with him to Humboldt [County], and with whom he lived happily until death claimed his faithful companion in 1883. For a number of years Mr. Delesaux was post master at Port Kenyon, where he was engaged in business up to a few weeks previous to his death, when he was removed to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robarts, where he had every attention that kind hearts could possible bestow. Honest in his dealings with his fellow man, kind and agreeable to all, and even a friend to the poor and needy, he goes to his eternal home, bearing the respect and esteem of a large circle of acquaintances. To his bereaved sons and other relatives we extend the sympathy of our community. ~~~~~~ One thing for certain, James was passionate about his politics. He is listed in the California Great Registers for having registered to vote several times, even twice in one day in two different places! He certainly must have had a fast horse! Talk about making your vote count -- twice! While that yesteryear idea may be fun to think about, the truth might just be that 'Port Kenyon' and 'Ferndale 2' -- two voting districts recorded separately within the California Great Registers -- were really the same place and the record was duplicated. So, maybe scuttlebutt, and maybe not! In the 1860 Census taken in Pacific Township, Humboldt County, California, James has 17-year-old Thomas De Lasaux living with him in his household. It is unknown whether this Thomas was a son of James's, or whether James had the son of one of his brothers living with him. The records below give dates and places of some of James's siblings, parents, and other relatives as well as his marriage record to Caroline Frances Fletcher (her maiden name was Fletcher). ~~~~~~ James's father was Thomas Thorpe DeLasaux, born about 1797, and died May 22, 1884. James's mother's maiden name was Elizabeth Cox, born about 1795. Thomas Thorpe DeLasaux was also married to Sarah Swain. Marriage record below.
Thomas Thorpe DeLasaux's father was Thomas De Lasaux, born November 1, 1753, Canterbury. Thomas Thorpe DeLasaux's mother's maiden name was Elizabeth Stock, born about 1755. Thomas Thorpe and Elizabeth Stock were married on April 2, 1856 in Ramsgate, Kent, England.
Thomas De Lasaux's (born November 1, 1753) father's name was Peter DeLasaux, born April 29, 1715. Thomas De Lasaux's (born November 1, 1753) mother's maiden name was Elizabeth Bathoit/Duthoit, born about 1717. They married on August 4, 1742. Various marriage records for James's siblings and his ancestors are below. ~~~~~~ List of children of Elizabeth (nee Cox/Cock) and Thomas Thorpe DeLasaux in their birth order.
