He having come here in 1877, and purchased a claim five miles north east of York, which he occupied until about two years ago, when on account of age and inability to do the work of the farm, sold his farm and bought a place in north York, which he improved and occupied until his death. Mr. J S Hiett, whose death we had just time to announce last week, was one of the old settlers of York county. He having come here in 1877, and purchased a claim five miles north east of York, which he occupied until about two years ago, when on account of age and inability to do the work of the farm, sold his farm and bought a place in north York, which he improved and occupied until his death. Mr. Hiett was a man of most kindly life and thought. "His life was gentle" and he was essentially a man who wanted to live in charity with all mankind, so that we doubt if he had an enemy among all who knew him. He was a member of the Christian Church and loved that church in all it's simplicity and fervor. He was sick only ten days before his death which occurred on Tuesday night Jan. 22nd, 1901 at about midnight. His last hours were spent surrounded by his children and all who loved him so well, and who , while they will greatly miss him from among them, yet realize that for him it was just going home. Had he lived eight days longer he would have rounded out his eighty years of a busy life. His wife, four sons and one daughter survive him who all love in or near York. Funeral Announcement from the York News Times Jan. 31,1901 The funeral of J. S. Hiett occurred this afternoon. He had an attack of the grip and being over eighty years of age, was unable to recover. His wife who is also very old is sick and not expected to live. James S Hiett married Susanna King March 17, 1846 in Virginia. To this union 12 children were born: Washington Irving, Martha E., Alexander R., Frances Elizabeth, Robert H., Mary L., Arthur, Lucy, Benjamin, Ivan C., Lurena, Charles Edward. In 1868-1869 he and the family moved from West Virginia to Illinois. In the fall of 1877 he moved to York Co. Nebraska where he farmed. James was converted to Christianity in the days of his youth at the congregation then known as the Timber Ridge in Hampshire Co., West Virginia.
