Strand was born to Theodore and Clara (Bothun) Strand on January 5, 1918 in Portland, ND. He grew up and attended school in Portland. He was a member of the American Legion for the past fifty years and was also a member of the VFW. James married Henrietta Thuen on November 18,1945 in Portland, ND. They farmed in the Portland area for the past fifty years until his retirement in 1996. He had been a resident of the Luther Memorial Home in Mayville, ND for the past year. He is survived by his wife, Henrietta (Henny), Portland; four sons, Jerald (Carol), Horace, ND, James A. (Karen), Bismarck, ND Michael (Madonna), Portland, ND, Dean, Portland, ND, two sisters, Agnes Braaten and Gladys Thuen, both of Portland, ND; two brothers, Orville (Arlene), Bismarck, ND and Maynard (Edith), Portland, ND; eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Theodore and Clara, Portland; a sister Mavis (Raymond) Carlson, Portland; two brothers, Clarence, Amenia, ND and Ernest, Hatton, ND. Funeral: 10:30 AM Saturday, January 31, 1998, at Aurdal Lutheran Church, Portland, with Pastor Eric Hulstrand officiating. Visitation: One hour before the funeral Saturday at the Church.
