Read More	Published in The Gaffney (SC) Ledger on Tuesday, October 14, 1947 (page 1) McCraw Dies Suddenly At Home In City James Virgil Lambert McCraw, 77 head of the hardware firm of Virgil McCraw & Sons on Mill street, died about 7 o'clock Saturday morning at his home at 843 North Granard street. He had suffered from a heart affliction for some years, but had been able to attend to business regularly recently. Born and reared in the Grassy Pond community, he was a son of the late A.J. and Elizabeth Huskey McCraw. In his younger days he taught school and soon after the formation of Cherokee county he served one term in the legislature as a member of the house of representatives. He had been engaged in the merchandising business here for nearly half a century. Mr. McCraw was studious by nature and he took a profound interest in public affairs, local, state and national. Funeral services were conducted at 4 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the Grassy Pond Baptist church of which he was a member. The Rev. E. Gray Jones, the pastor, the Rev. C.A. Kirby, the Rev. E. W. Lybrand and Dr. R.A. MacFarland were the officiating ministers. Interment was in the Grassy Pond cemetery with the Shuford-Hatcher Company, morticians, in charge. The pall bearers were Leonard and Wallace Humphries, Cotesworth, Aaron, Weldon and Lowell Morgan, and Buford McCraw. An honorary escort included G.G. Watts, L.C. Warmoth, W.C. Camp, Donald Huggin, B.B. Morgan, Sullie Lanier, C. Keys Sanders, C.W. Cooksey, Dr. B.W. Middleton, Harry Turner, C.Q. Wood, G.C. Stowe, Sam Kassler, George and Ralph LeMaster, T.L. Brown, Charles J. Hamrick, R.A. Dobson, Dr. J.C. Hall. Mr. McCraw is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Swofford McCraw; four daughters, Mrs. R.A. Humphries, Mrs. A.E. Morgan, Mrs. E.H. Sutton, of Gaffney, and Mrs. R.L. Crowder, of Durham, N.C.; five sons, Blucher, Lynn, Yancey and Lamar McCraw, of Gaffney, and L.G. McCraw, of Sandy Springs; three sisters, Mrs. C.H. Hall, of Spartanburg, Mrs. Maggie Ellis, of Gaffney and Miss Dottie McCraw, of Columbia; three brothers, J.A., A. Bonner, and D. Coster McCraw, of Gaffney; 22 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
