Clare, Nebraska, and departed this life March 27, 1944, at Los Angeles, California. He grew to young manhood near Mt. Clare, and graduated from Nelson High in the spring of 1937. Later he attended the University of Nebraska for one and one-half years. Four years ago he went to New Mexico where he was employed as a brakeman and later as a time-keeper in the Nevada Consolidated Corporation. In October, 1943, he went to Tucson, Arizona, where he was lead man in the Radio Dept. of the Vulte Consolidated Aircraft. Becoming ill several weeks ago, he went to Los Angeles and entered a hospital for treatment. Having been physically frail most of his life, this last illness was too severe to overcome, so the soul of James Carroll went to be with God. Those left to mourn his departure are his mother, Mrs. Catherine Carroll, six sisters, Mrs. Ethel Jacobitz of Bassett, Nebr., Mrs. Mae Schlichtman of Glendale, Calif., Mrs. Georgia Beadles and Mrs. Esther Adamson of Los Angeles, Mrs. Ada Stover of Alma, Colo., and Mrs. Mary Koester of Los Angeles. The four brothers are: Roy of Nelson, Pfc. Earl of Cambridge, Mass., Lt. Floyd of Tucson, Arizona. (NOTE: only three brothers are named.) Besides these he also leaves many other relatives and a host of friends. His father preceded him in death November 30, 1927. James was baptized in the former Mt. Clare Methodist Church and attended Sunday School there. His favorite pasttime (sic) was hunting. He loved to be in God's great out-of-doors. Just a few days before he died, he asked a Baptist minister who visited him, how he could be saved and know that he was a child of God. Gently and tenderly this servant of God pointed the way of salvation and through faith and surrender James became a child of God for God is always ready to receive those who seek Him. That peace that passeth all understanding entered his soul and the name of James Carroll was entered in the Lamb's Book of Life. The funeral services were conducted in the Christian church (sic) in Nelson by Rev. Clarence V. Powell, pastor of the Methodist Church. Mrs. C.V. Powell read the obituary. Music was furnished by a quartet, composed of Eileen Aikin, Virginia Ingram, Winerford Foust and Lowell Powell, with Mrs. Wood presiding at the piano. Ermerson Powell sang "Going Home", accompanied by Mrs. Ermerson Powell. The pallbearers were Orval Rose, Lyman Piepho, Dwight Adamson, Hubert Hattan, Homer Wehrman and Robert Page. The body was tenderly laid to rest in the family lot at Lawrence, Nebraska.
