Carroll, County Superintendent, of Schools, at 4:30 last Saturday afternoon came as a distinct shock to the people of this community. In apparent good health, Mr. Carroll had been working about his home here immediately prior to his passing. Death came as a result of cerebral apoplexy. Born near Lawrence, Mr. Carroll spent a large share of his 51 years in this county and enjoyed an extremely large acquaintanceship among its people. Coming to Nelson as a young graduate from college he became coach and instructor in the high school of which he was also a graduate and the records of his athletic teams during the four years -- 1923-1937 -- are without parallel in the history of the school. His successes as an educator continued in the school systems of which he became a part after leaving Nelson. Soon after retiring from active teaching, Mr. Carroll returned here with his family, and on October 18, 1943, he became County Superintendent, which position he has held since that time. He always took an active part in all organizations designed for the civic and social betterment of the communities in which he lived. The impression that Mr. Carroll left with young and old alike could best be gained by the throng that gathered on Wednesday afternoon to pay final respects to their coach, instructor and friend. More than four hundred and twenty-five people crowded the church and church basement, and overflowed into the yard for the services. The Nelson schools and all rural schools of the county dismissed during the time of the service. OBITUARY Roy W. Carroll, the son of Samuel and Catherine Carroll, was born near Lawrence, Nebraska, September 2, 1895, and departed this life from his home in Nelson, Nebraska, April 19, 1947, at the age of 51 years, 7 months and 17 days. During his childhood he lived at Mt. Clare and there he attended the grade school. He graduated from the Nelson High School on May 28, 1917. In April, 1917, he enlisted in the Navy and served in World War I for two years. After returning from the Navy he entered Hastings College, and graduated from there in the spring of 1923. From 1923 to 1927 he was the principal and coach in the Nelson High School. During his years as coach at Nelson his football team made a splendid record: In 1923 they won 5 games and lost 3 In 1924 they won 8 games and lost 1 In 1925 they won 9 games and lost 0; tied 1. In 1926 they won 5 games and lost 3; tied 1. His basketball team won the state championship of Class D in 1926, and his track team won first at Lincoln in May, 1926, in its class. After leaving the Nelson school Mr. Carroll taught at Hartington for two years. He was High School Superintendent at O'Neill nine years, and at Bassett four years. Then he went into Red Cross work as field director in World War II. On October 18, 1943, he was made an Entered Apprentice Mason in Nelson Lodge No. 77. On December 19, 1926, he was raised to a Fellow Craft, and on January 13, 1927, he was made a Master Mason. He became a member of the Nelson Lions Club January 28, 1945. He was also a member of the American Legion. In early manhood he joined the Nelson Methodist Church and later transferred to the various places where he taught. Upon returning to Nelson, he, his wife, and daughter Kay joined the Methodist Church by transfer, on Easter Sunday, 1945. For over two years he has been the Bible School teacher of the Young Adult Class. It has been said of him by many of the class members, "He is the best teacher we have ever had." On June 12, 1932 (sic), at O'Neill, Nebraska, Roy Carroll was united in marriage to Miss Elsie Pucelik. To this union there were born three daughters. He leaves to mourn his departure, his wife Elsie, and three daughters, Kay, age 12, Patty, age 8, and Constance, age 6; also his mother, Mrs. Catherine Carroll, and six sisters and three brothers. They are: Mrs. Ethel Jacobitz of Bassett, Nebraska; Mrs. Mae Schlichtman of Los Angeles, Calif.; Mrs. Mary Koester of McMinnville, Oregon; Mrs. Georgia Beedles of Los Angeles, Calif., Mrs. Ada Stover of Milliken, Colo.; Mrs. Esther Adamson of Santa Rita, New Mexico; Earl W. Carroll of Los Angeles, Calif; Staff Sgt. Ward Carroll of Cambridge, Mass.; and Floyd of Davis, Calif. His eldest brother died in infancy; his brother James died in 1944, and his father preceded him in 1927. The many friends that he leaves behind are legion. His motto was, "Let me live in a house by the side of the road, and be a friend to man." The funeral services were held in the Methodist church at 2:00 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Clarence V. Powell, assister (sic) by Mrs. C.V. Powell. Music was furnished by a girls' double sextette from the High School. By request Lowell Powell sang, "I Won't Have To Cross Jordan Alone." The services at the cemetery were conducted by the Nelson Masonic Lodge No. 77. The pallbearers were: Ralph Bottenfield, James House, Henry Hamel, Eiler H. Svendsen, W.E. Garrison and E.E. Murphy.
