The Herald Wednesday, July 27, 1892, Carroll, Iowa: The sad and surprising report reached the Rapids Tuesday that Wash Lovell had drowned the day before in North Coon while seining. The particulars as we gather them are as follows: He and his brothers, Joe and Jack, with Jud Churchill had decided on taking a little recreation by fishing and in other ways and took a seine with them to North Coon. Monday afternoon Jud and Wash Lovell started in the water with a net, Jud leading and Mr. Lovell, following, holding the brail. They were in rather strong current and as they moved along Jud came to deep water and told Lovell to look out. Lovell replied that he could not swim when Mr. Churchill said to him that he had better then not come further. At this Mr. Lovell dropped the net and started back, the water being up to his chest. For some reason, just as Mr. Lovell dropped the seine he was carried off his feet by the current, immediately disappearing, and never rising. His brothers John and Joseph, were near him, holding the net and as Wash let go the current so surged upon it as to almost jerk John headlong into mid-stream. both the brothers, as well as Mr. Churchill and Seig Heater, immediately dove after Wash, expecting to find him every moment, yet all efforts failed, until 15 hours afterwards when the body was found by means of grappling hooks, within only a few feet of where Mr. Lovell disappeared. The body was found on the bottom of the river in about 15 feet of water. It had by this time become considerably swollen and was brought home Tuesday night and buried at midnight in the Carrollton Cemetery, being too badly mortified to keep longer. The sad accident is a very trying one to his young wife, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S.A. Davis, as well as members of his own and her family, and they have the profoundest sympathy of all. Mr. Lovell was well respected and was just getting an excellent start in life.
