Description	:	James W. Bailey, age 97, of Marathon, Iowa died April 28, 2012 at the Laurens Hovenden Memorial Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Laurens. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at 1:30 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Marathon. Burial will be in the Poland Township Cemetery in Marathon. Visitation will take place Tuesday, May 1, 2012 from 5-7:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City where the family will be present the entire time. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City is in charge of the arrangements. James Wilbur Bailey, the son of Clifford and Florence (Morse) Bailey, was born on a farm north of Laurens, Iowa on May 26, 1914. The majority of Jim's youth was spent in Blackwell, Oklahoma where he received his education. Jim served his country with honor in the United States Army during World War II from October 10, 1940 until June 30, 1945. He was awarded a Bronze Star. On August 30, 1946, Jim was united in marriage to Beata L. Monkelien at the Elfsborg Lutheran Church in Pomeroy, Iowa. Together, they were blessed with eight children: Lynn, Neil, Beverly, Barbara, Wayne, Becky, Bonnie, and Daniel. Jim was dedicated to his farming vocation throughout his lifetime and he and his family have resided in Ayrshire, Cylinder, and Marathon over the years. He also had been employed at Mefferd Industries in Laurens. Jim thoroughly enjoyed going to auctions and raising his mules and horses. His grandchildren have fond memories of their grandpa teaching them about farming and mechanics. Jim also milked many cows while living on the farm. Jim was a longtime member of the Grace Lutheran Church at Marathon. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 65 years, Bea of Marathon, Iowa; children: Lynn Bailey of Marathon, Iowa; Neil (Kay) Bailey of Elizabeth, Illinois; Bev (Mike) McConeghey of Fairfield, Iowa; Wayne Bailey of Ayrshire, Iowa; Becky (Doug) Baker of Laurens, Iowa; Bonnie Black of Laurens, Iowa; Dan (Tracey) Bailey of Rembrandt, Iowa; 17 grandchildren: Brian, Brent, Bradley, Jeffrey, Christopher, Ian, William, Aaron, Clinton, Laine, Lance, Heidi, Austin, Joshua, Ryan, Braeden, and Camden; 12 great grandchildren; nieces; nephews; other extended family and many friends. Jim was preceded in death by his parents; infant daughter, Barbara; son-in-law, Robert Black; siblings: Kenneth Bailey, Joy Millage, Lyman Bailey, Doris Richardson, Mildred Richardson, Donald Bailey, and Jewell Mefferd.
