A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, August 14, at the Orangeburg Lutheran Church, with Pastor Everett Price officiating. Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, August 15, at St. Matthews Lutheran Church Cemetery, directed by Thompson Funeral Home, Inc. of Orangeburg. Honorary pallbearers will be the Brothers of Progress Lodge No. 356. Mr. Barber was born November 26, 1920, in Cameron, the oldest son of 14 siblings of the late James William Barber Sr. and the late Flossie Shumaker Barber. He served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of World War II. He was retired from the Sunbeam Bakery. He was a member of Orangeburg Lutheran Church but still considered his home church as St. Matthews Lutheran Church, where he was a longtime member from a young age. He was a member of Progress Lodge 356 Masonic Lodge in Orangeburg, a member of the Omar Shrine Temple, the Edisto Shrine Club, the York Rite Masons, the Scottish Rite Masons, a member of the VFW and the American Legion and the Masonic Light Club. He was preceded in death by six brothers and five sisters. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Miriam Elizabeth "Betty" Page Barber of the home; four daughters, Mrs. James C. (Carol) Pratt of Cameron, Jacquelyn "Jackie" Marie Inabinet of Charleston, Mrs. Michael (Brenda) Whitaker of Simpsonville, Mrs. Craig (Jamie) Cardwell of Rockwall, Texas; six grandchildren, Mrs. Chad (Kelly) Rast, Kip (Grae) Pratt, Gabe (Kathryn) Whitaker, Rachel (Damir) Nozinovic, Jimmy Inabinet, Beth Inabinet; five great-grandchildren, Courtney and Clayton Kittrell, Austin Rast, Mary and Jackson Pratt and Hannah Grace Whitaker; two brothers, George A. (Barbara) Barber and Ryan (Sissy) Barber; one sister, Mattie Mae Pooser and a number of nieces and nephews. Friends may call at the residence, 1225 Weeping Willow Road, Orangeburg and at the funeral home. Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, August 13, at the Edisto Shrine Club, Highway 301 (Five Chop Road), Orangeburg. Masonic Rites will be held at 7 p.m. at the beginning of visitation. Memorials may be made to the Shriners Children's Hospital, 950 West Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605-4277 or to a charity of one's choice.
