She was living in Glendale, CA in 1971 and was a librarian at the Los Angeles Public Library for about 40 years. According to her old friend Michael A. Michael wrote in his 2016 remembrance of Jane: "I never loved you, and yet you've been special since I first met you, that year, sixty years ago now, and six thousand miles away from our homes. You were part of my sanity in those two insane years of the Army. How unexpectedly significant you were in my life then, and have been, quietly, since. Back there, back then, in your attic office, we could talk. We talked about the States, about books and about your beloved Ludwig. It was only later that I learned that women name their automobiles. I never got a ride from him, but he certainly was a handsome dude, that black Mercedes cabriolet. It was your assistant Dieter, who helped me find, and purchase my own Mercedes, a lowly 170 V, and who, now that I had transportation, would introduce me to the countryside and quality wines, beers, and Bratwurst. I remember the time that I took a can of frozen orange juice concentrate from the mess hall and left it setting out on the shelf over your desk, and that it exploded a week later. How upset you were, how chagrined I was. And the mess I had to clean up. And there was Herr Matzdorf next door in the craft shop, painting posters and signs, with the only arm he had left, the result of his experience in a different Army, and in a different time." Michael said that learning Jane had been dead for about 30 years was a great shock. He had visited her a couple of times after the Army, since they both lived in the Los Angeles area, but although he thought of her sometimes, they never resumed the close friendship that they had shared in her library.
