Gillis Brender, 89, of Seattle, a former resident and frequent visitor to Leavenworth, died Monday afternoon, Feb. 25, 2002 at The Foss Home in Seattle. She was born Marjorie Jane Gillis on Aug. 6, 1912 to Ora and Donnah (Hoffman) Gillis in Baker, Custer County, MT. She was baptized on September 10, 1917 at the S.S. Missionary Presbyterian Church in Yellowstone Presbytery. At the age of six, the family moved to Bloomington, WI, where she grew up and received her early education. In 1929, the family moved to Leavenworth, where she graduated from Leavenworth High School in 1931. She was active in the Leavenworth High School drama productions. On Nov. 25, 1934, she married her high school sweetheart, Albert D. Brender, (son of John and Elizabeth Brender) in Peshastin. They made their home in Leavenworth until 1942 and then moved to Seattle, where Al worked in carpentry and subsequently was a founding partner in International Homes of Cedar in Woodinville. Al and Jane celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, Nov. 25, 1984 and they were members of the Haller Lake United Methodist Church in Seattle and Jane worked in the church office for 30 years. She was also a member of the United Methodist Women and she enjoyed gardening, travel and cats. Jane is survived by one sister, Leora Franklin of Lynnwood and a brother, William Gillis of Monmouth, OR and several nieces and nephews and cousins. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Al in 1988; one daughter Marlene Ann Brender in 1953; two sisters, Vi Stevens and Grace Hatmaker, both of Leavenworth. A Funeral Service of Commemoration to Celebrate The Life of Jane M. Brender, will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday afternoon, March 4, 2002 in the Leavenworth Community Methodist Church, with Pastor Lindsy Ireland officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. View Cemetery. Memorials may be made in her name to the Alzheimer's Association, 12721 30th Ave. NE, Suite 101, Seattle, WA 98125. Ward's Funeral Chapel, Leavenworth, is in charge of the arrangements.
