Description	:	Zellah Leora (Gillis) Franklin, born Sept. 29, 1916, in Ismay, Mont. (Custer County), spent her early years growing up on the family farm in Bloomington, Wisc., before her family moved to Leavenworth, Wash., in May, 1929. She was baptized at the S.S. Read More	Zellah Leora (Gillis) Franklin, born Sept. 29, 1916, in Ismay, Mont. (Custer County), spent her early years growing up on the family farm in Bloomington, Wisc., before her family moved to Leavenworth, Wash., in May, 1929. She was baptized at the S.S. Missionary Presbyterian Church in Yellowstone Presbytery on Sept. 10, 1917. She played the center position on the women's high school basketball team and also enjoyed downhill skiing. Leora graduated in 1935 from Leavenworth High School and one of her first jobs was as an usher at the Alpine Theatre. In Seattle on Oct. 17, 1940, she married William Franklin (also of Leavenworth), and they were married 59 years before his passing on March 4, 2000. In the first 14 years of marriage, they moved 14 times before settling into a brand new house on Penny Lane in Lynnwood in 1954. In addition to being a devoted mother to her two children, Jack and Kay, she loved their family cats and dogs, and would have liked to have some backyard chickens. Animals and small children always brought a smile and tender words. She enjoyed gardening, cheering for the Sonics and Mariners and always liked being with people and going "out". Chocolate was her favorite candy and she always kept some in her purse to share with others. Leora was a member of the Edmonds United Methodist Church since the early 1950s, United Methodist Women, Daughters of the American Revolution-Peter Puget Chapter and the Independent Order of Foresters in Edmonds. She is survived by her brother, William Gillis of Monmouth, Oregon; her son, William Ora Franklin of Lynnwood; daughter, Marlene Kay Franklin of Brier, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Leroy Franklin; her three sisters -- Vi Stevens, Jane Brender, Grace Hatmaker and their parents, Donnah (Hoffman) and Ora Gillis. Leora passed peacefully on to Heaven Aug. 22, 2009, in her home and will be greatly missed. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made in Leora's name to either: Macular Degeneration Foundation, Inc., P.O. A memorial service to celebrate her life is scheduled for Oct. 1, 2009, 2 p.m., Edmonds United Methodist Church with Pastors Kathlyn James and Dr. David L. Aasen officiating. A graveside service will be held Oct. 2, 2009, 2 p.m, Mt. View Cemetery, Leavenworth, Wash., with Pastor Roger Hudson, Community United Methodist Church officiating. Ward's Funeral Chapel in Leavenworth is in charge of the arrangements. Interment will be in the Mt. View Cemetery, Leavenworth, Wash.
