Shaffer Sr. of Madison; her husband, David Dale Johnson Jr.; her sisters, Catherine Blair and Margaret Frobase; and her brother, Winfield T. Shaffer. Surviving her are her brother, Harry G. Shaffer Jr.; daughters, Jane Funk (Philip), Julia Fleshman (William), and Georganna Francke (Rick); son, David Dale Johnson III (Beverly); 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Born July 20, 1920, in Madison, to Brookie and Harry Shaffer Sr., Jane attended Madison schools and graduated from Scott High School. At West Virginia University she was a member of the Delta Gamma fraternity and received a bachelor of arts in music education, with a minor in English, when she graduated in 1941. The following year she married David Dale Johnson Jr., whom she met at WVU. From 1942 to 1945 she taught English at Van High School. Jane was a beloved mother who raised four children and devoted her life to them, her church and the community. She joined Charleston Baptist Temple in 1947 and worshipped there for the rest of her life. She lent her rich alto voice to the Chancel Choir for many years and at various times also participated in American Baptist Women's Ministries, Vacation Bible School and the Diaconate Board. She also acted as piano accompanist for many Sunday school classes and programs, including the Eugene Austin Class and the Grayce Philathea Class. Her community involvement included membership in the Women's Kanawha Literary Society and Fort Hill Garden Club. She sat on the board of directors of the Arthur B. Hodges Center and worked with Meals on Wheels and the United Way Shoes for School Children Program. She served as a docent at the Sunrise Children's Museum and as a substitute teacher in the Kanawha County Schools. Jane had a special interest in the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra, holding season tickets for many years, sharing the music with her children and grandchildren and volunteering with its children's programs. In October, during the last weeks of her life, she was delighted to attend her final Symphony concert with her daughter, Georganna. She was an enthusiastic supporter of her children's and grandchildren's activities and, in recent years, could be seen at many George Washington High School Patriots basketball games. Jane's family extends special thanks to the skilled and compassionate physicians, nurses and other staff in the emergency department and medical intensive care unit at General Division of CAMC. Her funeral service will be at Charleston Baptist Temple, 209 Morris St., on Saturday, November 10, at 1 p.m. with Dr. Dennis L. Johnson, Senior Minister, officiating. Also participating in the service will be the Rev. Paul Francke, one of Jane's grandchildren. The family will receive friends from noon to 1 p.m. at the church. Jane's family asks that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions might be made to Charleston Baptist Temple. Barlow-Bonsall Funeral Home, Charleston, has been entrusted with the arrangements.
