Description	:	Information obtained from Linda Therkelsen: Jane (West) Canady was born in Nicholas County, Kentucky, on Jan. 28, 1815, to Phillip and Margaret (Jones) West. In that same county on Oct. 20, 1831, she was married at the age of 16 to 17-year old John Canady. (Documents pertaining to this marriage spell the last name as "Kennedy".) Their first ten children were also born there in Kentucky. John was a farmer who never held slaves. Read More	Information obtained from Linda Therkelsen: Jane (West) Canady was born in Nicholas County, Kentucky, on Jan. 28, 1815, to Phillip and Margaret (Jones) West. In that same county on Oct. 20, 1831, she was married at the age of 16 to 17-year old John Canady. (Documents pertaining to this marriage spell the last name as "Kennedy".) Their first ten children were also born there in Kentucky. John was a farmer who never held slaves. By 1849 he had about 62 acres valued at $500, but the land in Nicholas County was rocky and hilly, and also becoming worn out from repeated tobacco crops. By 1850 the family had moved to DeWitt Township, Clinton County, Iowa. Three more children were born to them in Clinton County. Two of the older sons joined the Union army during the Civil War, and in 1862 John left Jane and the six or seven children that were still living at home. It is speculated that due to financial difficulties caused by debtors who did not repay him, he went to work in the pineries in Wisconsin. In 1866 Jane obtained a divorce and moved with her children to Story County, where she began buying land. In the 1885 census she was found living with her daughter Ellen Gilchrist and family. John returned to Iowa in 1886, at which time a newspaper account stated that he had "met with further reverses in the pineries, and was insane for a time, but he recovered mentally and financially and was at last heard from in Pittsburgh [PA]." At the ages of 72 and 71, he and Jane then remarried in August of 1886. Jane died about a year later, on August 31, 1887 in Ontario, Story Co., Iowa.
