Among those numbers is William N Canaday who was born in Nicholas County Kentucky, on Saturday Dec 31,1842 in the last hour of the year. His parents John and Jane (West) Canady also natives of Kentucky were residents of that state until 1850, when they came with their family to to Iowa settling in Clinton Co near Dewitt. (sic) The mother died in Woodbury county Iowa but the father spent his last days in Pittsburg Pennsylvania. The family numbered twelve children five sons and seven daughters of whom Robert Canady served for three years as a soldier in Company H Twenty-sixth Iowa Infantry during the struggle to preserve the Union. William N Canady was but eight years of age when his parents left Kentucky and went to Clinton county, Iowa, where his youthful days were spent on a farm. The public schools afforded him his education privileges and when not busy with his text-books he worked in the fields. His time was given to farm work until his enlistment for service in the Union army on the 12th of August 1861 as a member of Company A Eighth Iowa Infantry. The regiment was assigned to the Army of Tennessee and with his command Mr Canady participated in the battles of Shilo, Corinth, the Siege of Vickburg, Champion Hll, Grand Gulf and Memphis, being in Memphis in 1864 when General Forest made his raid. The Eighth Iowa saved the city on that occasion. Afterword Mr Canady took part in in the battle of Spanish Fort and was in all sixteen important engagements. He received an honorable discharge on the 20th of April 1865 and then returned home. During the period of the war he attained his majority and on the 6th of February 1866 Mr. Canady was married to Miss Loretta Tamer (correction Turner)who was born in Dewitt Clinton County Iowa October 14, 1847 and is the daughter of Joseph and Sarah (Shinn) Tamer (Turner) father a native of New Brunswick and the mother of Illnois. Her death occurred in her native state while Mr Tamer (Turner) passed away at Wall Lake Iowa. Following his marriage Mr Canady engaged in farming in Clinton county for a brief period but in December 1866 came to Story county and located near the present site of the Iowa State College. He aided in bulding the first central bulding of that institution. He also went to Zenosville Boone county where he worked in the coal mines for 20 years, and in 1902 he came to Gilbert where he followed carpentering. The past five years however have been spent in the conduct of a wagon shop. He learned the trade of carpentering in 1872 and followed it in De Moines Boone and other cities. He possesses natural mechanical ability which training and experience have augmented and he is now numbered among the capable artisans of Gilbert where he has won a liberal patronage in the conduct of his wagon shop during the past five years. Unto Mr. and Mrs. Canday have been born ten children: Carter N now living in Pittsburg Eddie N, who died in infancy, Etta M the deceased wife of Clifford Zenor, Murt lliving in Greene county Iowa,Sadie J the wife of George Black, of Dawson Iowa Leonard J at home; Lillly the wife of Frank Reynold of Boone; Arthur of Pittsburg and Thomas E and Ethel both at home. Two or the sons Carter and Arthur are graduates of the civil engineering department of the Iowa State College the former having completed his course in 1888 and the latter in 1908 Carter Canady now has charge of the highway department for the American Bridge Company at Pittsburg Pennsylvania and Arthur is working there for him. He has also spent eight months at work on the Panama canal In his political views Mr. Canady has long been a republican, believing that the principles of that party contain the best elements of good government. While living in Boone county he served as justice of the peace for ten yeas and his decisions were based upon a comprehensive knowledge of the law as well as of the equity of the case. He has also been justice of the peace of Gilbert for two years and was the second mayor of this city. He takes an active part in the public life of the community and his worth is recognized by his fellow men who have honored himj with office. He belongs to Frank Bentley Post No. 89, G. A. R of Gilbert also to the Odd Fellows Lodge her and is likewise a member of the Congregational church. A review of his life shows that he has closley followed a course which has made of him a valued citizen and an upright man He has many good qualities is social and genial by nature and at all times approachable. Good words are said of him by his fellow townsmen and he is justly accouted one of the worthy citizens of Gilbert. Civil war service: Co A 8th Regiment Iowa Vounteer Infantry 8/12/1861 Enlisted first time 9/5/1861 Mustered at Davenport, IA for 3 yrs 12/31/1863 Honorably discharged 1/1/1864 Enlisted US Army for 3 years in Pocahontas TN When he was 21 1/11/1864 Re-enlisted and re-mustered 3/1865 disabled with Rheumatism contracted at Mobile Ala 5/1/1865 Promoted Seventh Corporal 4/20/1866 Mustered out in Selma Alabama 4/20/1866 Mustered out in Washington D.C. 7/18/1866 Discharged at Davenport IA (I rearranged these items by date) On these dates he lived in the following places: 1867 Dewitt, IA; 1871 Ontario, IA; 1873 Marion, IA; 1902 Zenorsville, IA;A/O 1912 Gilbert Station IA. In the 1920 Federal Census for Iowa William was listed from Story county in the city of Gilbert. His birthplace was Kentucky and he was 77 years old. "Lorretta" Canady was also listed as wife at age of 62(when in fact it would be 72) and her name should be spelled with one n. (?) On his Declaration for pension dated May 21, 1912 he resudes at De Witt Clinton County from 1850 to 1866 except time of service in war from 1866 tour. I lived in Story county IA except 18 years in Zenorvile Boone Co IA In his declaration for pension of July 24 1922 it states he was discharged December 31, 1863 at Pocahontas Tenn. It also states that since leaving the service he has resided at De Witt IA 1 year Ontario Iowa 6 years Marion Ia 1 year Zenorville Ia 20 years Gilbert Ia 21 yrs Dawson Ia 2 years Dawson is in Dallas Co by Perry. On Certificate of death dated June 30, 1924 it stated he died in Nora Springs Floyd County Iowa while he resided in Dawson Iowa. He was 81 yrs 6 months old. It state that his father's name was John Canady and mother's name Jane [West] His occupation was listed as a carpenter.
