Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Elwood with the Rev. Michael Wolff officiating. Burial will be at East Salem Cemetery southwest of Elwood. She was born July 20, 1927, on the family ranch west of Elwood to Perry "P.J." and Alice (Kolb) Umberger. On May 2, 1948, she married Ted Schutz in Elwood. He died in 2008. Survivors include her sons, Scot Schutz and his wife, Cindy, Steve Schutz and his wife, Nancy, and Stanley Schutz and his wife, Rhonda, all of Elwood, and Clay Schutz and his wife, Heidi, of Grand Island; daughter, Jane Hilton and her husband, Bob, of Elwood; grandchildren and their spouses, Anthony and Cori Schutz and Stephen Schutz, all of Lincoln, Tiffany and Bodie Weeder of Minden, Danielle and Matt Buckneburg of Overland Park, Kan., Grant and Chelsea Schutz and Jason Schutz, all of Elwood, Lisa and Naeson Halker of Gretna, Lori and Ryan Shutts of Sidney, Amy and Rob Czaplewski, Perry Schutz, Levi Schutz and Maddie Schutz, all of Grand Island, and Eric and Jami Hilton of Eagle; stepgrandchildren, Hannah, Maddie, Allie, Brogan, Hayden and Elise Vahle, all of Grand Island; 14 great-grandchildren; brother, Bill Umberger and his wife, Shirley, of Omaha; sister-in-law, Elmyra Wolf of Arapahoe; and many other relatives and friends. She attended District 47 rural school and later graduated from Elwood High School with the class of 1945. Janet taught at a rural school near Turkey Creek for a year before returning to Elwood to teach at District 47. She and Ted were married at the Methodist Church in Elwood. The couple lived, farmed and raised livestock southwest of Elwood, in the Salem community, where they raised their family. In 2000, the couple moved to town, where they lived together until Ted's passing. Most recently, Janet resided at Elwood Care Center where she received excellent care. -
