The journey began on a Tuesday, April 9th 1929. Janice was the first born daughter of Ches and Hilda Long. Born of pioneer lineage, her grandfather, George B. Long, owned and operated the first stage line in Lassen County area. Janice first home was a little white house in Susanville that was the home of her grandparents, George and Susie Long, and remains today in the Long family. Early in her life her parents took on a ranching operation east if Johnstonville which soon subjected Janice to the rigors and pleasures of ranching life. With her sister, Garnie, Janice spent many hours astride a horse, including daily school attendance. She became proficient in jumping and rodeo and was well known for her skill at the Lassen County Fair. As a young girl, Janice was also was a member of the local 4-H club scene, which afforded her the opportunity of showing project steers at our county fair. Her many years of 4-H exposure stayed with her throughout her adult life. Over 40 years Janice held numerous committee heads and offices with the county 4-H Leaders Council as well as donating her time as a project leader at the club level for many years. Janice helped coordinate and manage the Lassen County Fair Junior Livestock Auction. When Janice had her own family, she made a point of getting her children involved in 4-H also. Janice is a graduate of Lassen High School with the class of 47. It was around this time she came to know her future husband, Dale Flux, who was working on this uncle's ranch south of Milford. Janice and Dale were married on Jan 10th 1948 and enjoyed 62 years together. This young couple worked on several different ranches for the first 16 years of their married life. In 1964 they took over ownership of a ranch near Janesville which was the home of Janice's parents. The Fluxes were involved in the beef industry their entire ranching carriers. They raised four children together who also held close to their ranching roots. Janice and Dale remained in the cattle business until life took them down a different path. Janice was well known throughout the community for her devotion to the CowBelles(now the Cattlewomen)and the Cattlemen's Association. She was named CowBelle of the year in 1975. Janice was appreciated by all as that person you could count on. Janice will be remembered for the things that brought her the most joy,like having all her children around during the holidays, a good rousing game of pinochle with her grandsons;reaping the rewards of her yard and garden;watching a new crop of baby calves born every spring;and best of all,spending a day with Dale on horseback while moving a bunch of cows. What she left behind for us all will be treasured memories that we will hold dear and occasionally pass on to someone else. Janice was preceded in death in 2010 by her husband Dale. She is survived by her sister,Garnie Pinneo(Bob), of Litchfield, four children,Judy Somerville(Tom McClelland),Tom Flux(Vicki)Cheri Blosser(Hugh),Ruth Mallery(Wilson)10 grandchildren,and 23 great grandchildren.
