She was born on the family farm, rural Elkader, on July 16, 1932, the oldest child, of Orvald E. and Iowa L. (Erickson) Larson. Janis was baptized and confirmed at Highland Lutheran Church. She was born on the family farm, rural Elkader, on July 16, 1932, the oldest child, of Orvald E. and Iowa L. (Erickson) Larson. Janis was baptized and confirmed at Highland Lutheran Church. She attended country school and started high school in 1948. During her junior year of high school, Janis developed rheumatoid arthritis and was unable to graduate with her class. She spent many months at the Mayo Clinic and was a patient in furthering medical research in the use of steroids. She endured extensive surgeries over the years, but despite all of her physical challenges, she was an inspiration to all who knew her - always encouraging people with her “upbeat attitude” and unique ability through her sustained faith, to forget her own physical challenges and be an encouraging figure to others and their problems. She was finally able to earn her high school diploma many years later. She became mobile enough to go to Des Moines and work at the Department of Rehabilitation where she met her loving husband David William “Bill” Brown. They were married November 4, 1969. Together they became champions of overcoming adversity. Janis had been residing at the Elkader Care Center for several weeks prior to her passing. Janis worked for the Elkader city treasury office for a time, auditing the books. She was a lifelong member of Highland Lutheran Church, where she also served as Treasurer. Janis enjoyed visiting with family and friends. Genealogy was also a special interest. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother Edward Larson.
