Buchanan on Deer Lick Creek, a tributary of Honey Camp Creek. His father was Silas P. better known as P. Buchanan. His mother was Martha Keel Buchanan. Mrs. Buchanan was the former Miss Bessie Dotson. She was born Jan 17, 1889 at Darwin at the old Charlie Hibbitts Place. Her parents were Alex Dotson and Jane Swindall Dotson, who was sister of the noted Elder Calvin Swindal, an Old Regular Baptist minister who passed awy several years ago. Mr. Buchanan attended an old log school house know as Lost Meeting House at the mouth of Honey Camp Branch. This old building was used for school and church services. The noted Elder Morgan Lipps once pastored that old church seventy five years ago or longer. The old school had split chestnut logs with two slanting peg legs in each end to sit on, no backs, two windows, one on either side to furnish light. A chimney place in one end where an open fire furnished heat for the buiding. This old building was a well known landmark in Dickenson County. Mrs. Buchanan attended a school at Darwin located on the site of the present Old Regular Baptist Church on Longs Fork. Seats were rough plank. Some of her teaches were Emory Hughes, later merchant for many years on Georges Fork, and Henry Reed who became a doctor of much note later and was instrumental in the establishing the Holston Valley Community Hospital in Kengsport, Tenn. Mrs. Buchanan worked for a time on the W. P. A. and helped survey the C. C. and O. Railroad. Worked on the old steamboats on Big Sandy as far up the river as Prestonsburg, Ky. He served as school board member of Dickenson County for five years. He farmed and raised stock most of his life. At one time he had thrity sheep. Mr. and mrs. Buchanan first began housekeeping on Turkey Branch of the Honey Camp Community. It was so called because there were at that time many wild turkeys found there. They lived many years in the Honey Camp Community. Thei children are: Edla Ray, never married deceased. Grace died in infancy. Alta married Dallas Edward, one son Tommy. Carter D. Buchanan died at the age of five years. Beulah married Ralph Ellison. No children, deceased. Newton, JR. deceased at two years of age. Bill married Florence Fleming (of Rufus). Their children are: David, Gail, Patsey and two died in infancy. David now in Army at Fort Bragg. Guy married Gusta Mullins. Their children are: John Paul who is now serving in the Army at Fort Bragg, N. C. Jimmie and Peggy are at home. They live on the Rockhouse Road near Darwin. Guy is a Primitive Baptist minister. He is assistant moderator of his home church the Clintwood Primitive Baptist Church now located at Darwin, Va. He is Moderator of the McClure Primitve Baptist Church on Oopen Fork of McClure River near the Ervinton High School. This is one of the oldest churches in Dickenson County. He has been in the ministry for the past 10 years. Mr. Buchanan has been sick since May 6 and was in the Appalachian Regional Hospital at Wise, Va. for 48 days. His wife remained with him there during those long days. He and Mrs. Buchanan are now making their home with their son, Guy and family at Darwin. They still own their home near Pound, Va. where they lived for the past two years until his sickness. Mr. and Mrs. Buchanan both belong to The Primitive Baptist Chruch at Darwin. He has been a member of that church for the past 27 years and she for the past 30 years. The Elder Daniel Robinette of Powell Valley baptized both of them. We hope these good people will be with us many years to come.
