She was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) in October 2000. Despite the toll of the disease, she embraced life, and she lived with faith, courage, determination, and humor until the end. She did not show self-pity, and said, "I refuse to say I'm suffering from ALS. I'm living with it." She taught herself to use a computer and send e-mail so she could communicate with her family, even after she lost the ability to speak. Each day, she looked for what she called her "bonus," something special to appreciate. She was a gifted homemaker who could cook, bake, sew, garden, preserve, and make a beautiful home. She was a farm wife who, in the early days of her marriage, did everything from churning butter to keeping the farm accounts. She loved to quilt, and created beautiful quilts for her family. She was a champion bowler, who won second place in pairs bowling in North Dakota. Her pies and breads were well-known, and won many blue ribbons at fairs. She often brought her baking to those who were old, sick, or alone. Her flower gardens and love of wildlife and nature brought her great pleasure. She had a deep and abiding faith in God that sustained her throughout her life. As a child she memorized 500 Bible verses to win the coveted prize of books, which were a luxury to a farm girl growing up during the Great Depression. She was born Nov. 19, 1930, in Skandia Township near Litchville, N.D., the fourth of seven children of Johnnie and Alma (Salthammer) Gusaas. She attended the Skandia 60 one-room school down the hill from her home and she was the top speller of all grades. She graduated from Litchville High School, and went on to Northwestern Bible College in Minneapolis, Minn. She was a nurses aid at Mercy Hospital and Sheyenne Care Center in Valley City, N.D., and North Dakota State Hospital and the Anne Carlson School in Jamestown, N.D. She married George Olson on April 16, 1950, and they farmed in LaMoure County. In 1962, the bought the farm owned by the Olson family since 1891. They retired in 1987 and continued to live on their beloved farm. Jean was a lifelong Lutheran and a member of the First Lutheran Church in Litchville, where she served as a caretaker for 18 years. She taught Sunday School and Bible school, and was Sunday School superintendent for many years. She held local, conference and district offices in Lutheran church women organizations. She was a creative writer and speaker who shared her talents for 12 years as a member of the steering committee for Lutheran Lay Renewal of North Dakota. She is survived by her husband, George of Litchville; six children; nine grandchildren; a granddaughter died in infancy. She is also survived by her six brother and sisters and 18 nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Friday from 10-8 in Oliver-Nathan Funeral Chapel, Valley City, and one hour before the funeral in the church. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, from First Lutheran Church in Litchville, with arrangements by Oliver-Nathan Funeral Chapel, Valley City.
