Description	:	Jean E. Cumbow, 86, of Valentine died peacefully at home Oct. 16, 2006, following a courageous battle with cancer. She was born May 23, 1928, in Valentine. Her parents were Hank and Gussie Slaughter. Jean was home schooled through eighth grade as she traveled with her parents to the sale yards they owned. Cumbow... Read More	Jean E. Cumbow, 86, of Valentine died peacefully at home Oct. 16, 2006, following a courageous battle with cancer. She was born May 23, 1928, in Valentine. Her parents were Hank and Gussie Slaughter. Jean was home schooled through eighth grade as she traveled with her parents to the sale yards they owned. She graduated from Valentine High School in 1944 at the age of 15. Jean attended college at Stephens in Columbia, Mo., and Duchene College in Omaha. On Dec. 27, 1947, Jean married William A. Cumbow at St. Nicholas Catholic Church. They had five children. Jean was employed at the Valentine Livestock Auction Co. for 25 years, as well as 30 years at her husband''s accounting office. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW and was active in the St. Nicholas Altar Society. Jean enjoyed her rose garden, cooking and canning, playing bridge and spending time with her family and friends. Grateful for having shared her life are her children Carol (Doug) Erickson of Yulee, Fla., William (Vicky) Cumbow of Valentine, Mary (Ron) McKay of North Platte, Nancy (Jonathan) Aal of Brandon, S.D., and Susan (Steve) Kerr of Valentine; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sister-in-law Dorothy (Jack) Kreycik; brother-in-law Wade Davenport; four nephews and one niece. She will be greatly missed by all. She was preceded in death by her husband Bill Cumbow, parents Hank and Gussie Slaughter and sister-in-law Pauline Davenport. Mass of Christian Burial was Oct. 20 at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Valentine. Father Bernard Berger officiated. Interment was in Mount Hope Cemetery in Valentine. Arrangements were with Sandoz Chapel of the Pines. North Platte Bulletin 10/25/2006
