Casketbearers were grandchildren: Sheri Pfeil, Crystal Berney, Ryan Paulsen, Jared Paulsen, Heather Berney, Angie Owen, Brooke Berney, Shane Paulsen, David Berney and Taylor Berney. Jeane M. Berney, the eighth of nine children of William and Hazel (Stratton) Borre, was born July 1, 1927, in Howard County near Cushing. She entered into rest October 22, 2006, at the Nebraska Veterans Home in Grand Island at the age of 79 years. Jeane spent her childhood on a farm southeast of Wolbach, graduating from Wolbach High School in 1944. On April 28, 1946, she was united in marriage to Virgil Berney at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Wolbach. They lived in Wolbach until 1958 when they moved to the Glenwood area, north of Palmer. In 1978, they moved into Palmer, where Jeane lived until 2001, when she became a resident of the Nebraska Veterans Home in Grand Island due to failing health. After their children were grown, Jeane worked for several years at the Coolidge Rest Home in Palmer. She was very active in the American Legion Auxiliary and the "8 and 40," serving in various offices through the years and enjoyed traveling to Legion conventions. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Jeane was an excellent cook and enjoyed bowling, playing cards, fishing, gardening, going to Husker games, and doing crafts. Jeane was a member of the Palmer United Methodist Church. As a couple, Virgil and Jeane did extensive volunteer work for the Nebraska Veterans Home and in the Palmer community, being honored several times for their service to others. At the Veterans Home, Jeane had volunteered over 1,750 hours. Another way Jeane liked to volunteer was to donate blood to the American Red Cross, which she did for a number of years. Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Virgil of the Nebraska Veterans Home; three sons and two daughters-in-law: Virgil and Linda Berney of Grand Island, Bill and Mary Berney of Spalding, and Scott Berney of Wolbach; one daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Larry Paulsen of Palmer; ten grandchildren, Sheri Pfeil; Angie Owen; Crystal and Brooke Berney; Ryan, Shane and Jared Paulsen; David, Heather and Taylor Berney; nine great-grandchildren: Erick and Anna Owen, Brenden Berney, Brianna and Alyssa Ramos, Alex Berney, Hayden Clark, Garrett Paulsen, and Brayden Lindsley; and a sister, JoAnn Kamper, of Grand Island. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Terry, who was killed in action in Viet Nam in 1969; two brothers, Don and Wayne Borre; and five sisters: Vivian Moffett, Doris Berney, Lorraine Moffett, Wanda Nelson and Billie Fiese.
