Terry L. Berney, 20, were held Friday, October 17, 1969 at 2:00 P.M. at the United Methodist Church in Palmer. The Rev. Kenneth Rood officiated and the Greenway Funeral Home of Palmer was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Hillside Cemetery at Wolbach. Military rites were conducted at the graveside by the American Legion Burton Beyer Post 120, Palmer and Ray Mapes Post 236, Wolbach. Special Escort was Seaman, Roger Bader. Pallbearers were Charles W. Keller, Wayne Kanter, Larry Fiese, Gregory Nicholas, Steven Dugger and Richard Fiese. Soloist was Mrs. Tom Winfield, who sang "Abide With Me" and "The Lord's Prayer", accompanied by the organist, Miss Debra Lemmerman. Terry Lynn Berney was born in St. Paul on November 30, 1948 to Virgil and Jeane Berney Sr. of Wolbach. He was baptized in infancy in Trinity Lutheran Church. He attended school in Wolbach until March 1, 1958 when he moved with his family to a farm near Palmer. He completed grade school in Glenwood, a rural school in Nance County. He graduated from Palmer High School in May, 1966. His basic training was at Ft. Lewis, Washington. He attended Advanced Individual Training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. He graduated a Sergeant from Non-commissioned Officers School at Fort Benning, Georgia in March of 1969. He was then transferred to Ft. Ord, California for addition training before going overseas. After a month's leave with his family and friends he left from Oakland, California for Vietnam of July 4, 1969. He served with D Company, Third Battalion of the 8th Infantry assigned to the 4th Division near An Khe in the Central Highlands. Terry was killed in action on October 1, 1969. He was on a combat operation when a hostile force was encountered. He was a member of Burton-Beyer post No. 120, American Legion, Palmer. He is survived by his parents, three brothers, Virgil Jr. of Lincoln, William and Scott of Palmer; one sister, Diane of Palmer; his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Bessie Berney of St. Paul, his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William Borre of Wolbach.
