At the time of her birth, her father, Adam Wagner, was 37, and her mother, Mary Ann Bretz, was 31. She married Edwin Clarence Marquart 20 December 1894 in Boone, IA, and they had four children together. Their first child was born on 16 October 1895 in Floyd Twp., Woodbury County, IA, and died 21 October 1895 at the age of 5 days; she is buried at Graceland Park Cemetery, Sioux City, Woodbury, IA. Their second child was Hilda Faye Marquart, born on 31 March 1899 in Floyd Twp., Woodbury County, IA. She married Harry Henderson on 05 October 1920 in Floyd Thp., Woodbury County, IA. He was born on 22 Nov 1894 and died on 25 April 1971. Hilda died on 25 August 1952. Their third child was Ortha Violet Viola Marquart, born on 30 June 1904 in Floyd Twp., Woodbury County, IA. She married Theodore John Hohnbaum, and she died on 11 September 1989 in Danvenport, IA. Their fourth child was Iola Alverta Marquart, born on 21 December 1907 in Floyd Twp., Woodbury County, IA. She married August Joseph Versluis, son of Edward Versluis and Philomena VanHoecke, on 09 June 1931 in Tipton, Cedar County, IA. He was born on 24 March 1885 in Sint-Laureins, Belgium. He died on 28 October 1979 in Gunnison, Gunnison County, CO. Iola died on 03 November 1983 in Gunnison, Gunnison County, CO. Edwin helped with the work on his family farm, but Nettie wanted a life of their own so they planned for a long time to move to Canada to be wheat ranchers. His sister Ida (Marquart) and husband Josef Ludwig Hamren were already living in Camrose, Alberta, Canada. In October of 1910 Edwin and Nettie began their move to Canada. They were going to farm for one year on a the old Adam Henz farm on Luxemburg Road just outside of St. Cloud, Minnesota in Sterns County, and then later push on to Canada. However, in St. Cloud on the night of 4 December 1910, Edwin was checking on some livestock that were coming in for him. Shortly before 12 o’clock that Thursday night, Northern Pacific freight locomotive no. 1211 ran him over as he laid prostate on the tracks between Seventh and Eighth Avenues north, severing his head and right foot. Nettie and her children went to live with her brother Frank, who was living alone on a farm near Bennett, IA. From, there, they moved to Tipton, IA, where she met and married Stephen Douglas Baker on 27 March 1912, and they had one daughter together. Their daughter was Iva Mae Baker, born 23 November 1915 in Tipton, Cedar County, IA. She married Gilbert Worby in 1931 in Illinois. He was born 6 March 1901 and died 11 March 1969. Iva died on 18 August 1988 in Iowa City, IA. Several years before Nettie’s death, her health was failing, and in the year prior to her death she was confined to her bed much of the time. She grew weaker and died on December 29, 1938, in Tipton, Iowa, at the age of 63, and is buried there. (Bio provided by John Versluis)
