Mr. and Mrs. Pedersen with three children came to Dannebrog from Denmark, the 8th day of August 1880. They lived in Dry Creek vicinity for about eight years and from there they went to Colorado where they made their home of five years. They lived in Hamilton county three years and Greeley County one year, after which they made their home in Howard County the rest of their lives. For the past seventeen years the home was in Dannebrog. Mr. and Mrs. Pedersen celebrated their golden wedding June 10, 1916. After the death of his wife twelve years ago, Mr. Pedersen lived alone. He died May 26, 1928 at the age of 83 years, 2 months, and 23 days. He had failed in strength the last year or so, but was not sick. He was working until the very last day of his life. His sudden death came as a shock to all. Mr. Pedersen was a good husband and father, a good man in every way, honest, upright and industrious all this life. He was a good neighbor and friend and will be missed by us all. He was a member of the local Lutheran Church in Dannebrog; not only a member, but a true Christian. He leaves to mourn his loss, two sons Niels Pedersen of Fremont and P.N. Pedersen of Broken Bow and two daughters, Mrs. Louis Petersen and Mrs. Eddie Lauritsen of Dannebrog. Sixteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren and a host of friends. The funeral was held Tuesday from the church of which he was a member. Rev. J.C. Pedersen, his old pastor and friend preached the sermon on Genesis 5:23-25, Rev. A.S. Nielsen read scriptures and led in prayer. The funeral was attended by a large number of relatives and friends. The floral offerings were beautiful. The flower bearers were Marie Lauritsen, Sadie Lauritsen, Virginia Lauritsen, Marjorie Lauritsen, May and Agnes Petersen, all granddaughters of Mr. Pedersen. Pall bearers wereEddie Lauritsen, George Lauritsen, Niels Petersen, P.N. Petersen, Louis Petersen and Norman Petersen. He was laid to rest in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Dannebrog. Phonograph - June 6, 1928 NOTE: Peder Petersen's surname was at one time Pedersen. At some point it was changed. His true given name is Jens Peder but he used the name "Peter", the English spelling for Peder. His headstone states his name as Peter Petersen. ___________________________________ AGED RESIDENT DIES SUDDENLY WHILE ALONE When the news passed about town last Sunday that Peder Pedersen had been found dead at his home in Dannebrog that morning, it came as a great and unexpected shock to the entire community. Peder was found lying by the side of his bed about eight O'clock Sunday morning. All the circumstances seem to show that a light stroke or heart trouble was the cause of his death. In spite of his eighty-three years of age and the fact that his health has been failing him somewhat during the last year, Peder was very active to the last. He was always occupied with some useful work. If he did not have work to do for himself around his home, he would help his neighbors and friends. He was around, working as usual on Friday and neighbors who conversed with him that evening say he seemed to be feeling well. He was not seen on Saturday, however, and the fact led neighbors to go and investigate Sunday morning. Both doors and all the windows were locked and it was necessary to get help to unlock the doors. The first thing those entering through the kitchen door noticed was a large hole that had been burned in the floor of that room. Lying by the side of the bed in the adjoining room was the body of old Peder. The doctor was called and he gave the opinion that he had been dead for about twenty-four hours. It would seem that Peder arose at sunrise Saturday morning as was his custom and went to the kitchen to light the fire. While doing so, he must have accidentally tossed a lighted match into a wooden box containing a quantity of small twigs. These had started blazing and burned the hole in the floor. The tightly closed rooms must have exhausted the oxygen to smother the fire and saved the house from total destruction. Evidently, while returning to the bed-room to dress himself, Peder was taken suddenly ill and fell to the floor unconscious. A big bruise on his forehead indicated he had fallen so quickly as to not be able to protect himself. The fire then had filled the rooms with the smoke and made it more impossible for Peder to recover consciousness.
