Died in Pawnee City, Neb., Wednesday, July 1st, 1908, in the 85th year of his age. Mr. Pope was twice married. His first son Joseph is still living in Paris, Ill. During his second marriage four children were born, three of whom are living-- H. B. of Pawnee City, J. F. of Burwell, and I. B. of University Place. Deceased moved from his native state to Illinois in 1862, where he lived until 1882, when he moved to Pawnee City. He held to the Methodist faith and at one time was a member of that church. He was a great student of the Scriptures, and during the past year, when he was unable to read by reason of failing eyesight, he would have one of his sons read the Bible to him. A very appropriate funeral sermon was preached Friday forenoon by Dr. J. R. McCready and interment was had in the city cemetery by the side of his wife, who passed away two years ago. Mr. Pope came from sturdy Kentucky stock and was himself a man of strong individuality. He met most of the conditions and situations of life with a joke. As an illustration of his disposition along this line may be mentioned an incident he once related to his friend W. B. Raper. "It was down in old Kentucky," said Uncle Jerry, "that a man grossly insulted me. I struck him a quick, hard blow full in the face," he continued, and then stopped as if at the end of his story. "Well," inquired Mr. Raper, "what happened then?" "I don't know," replied Uncle Jerry, "I didn't come to till 4 o'clock." And yet he was withal a practical, matter-of-fact man, but had his own peculiar way of extracting merriment from life as it went along. When he died, full of years and ready to be gathered to his fathers, the grief that was felt at the close of his long career extended to all who knew him.
