He was taken prisoner during or after the Battle of Shiloh on April 6, 1862. Jerial was "paroled" from a Confederate prison in Montgomery, Alabama. While held captive, he caught malaria, which relapsed several times during his life. He was paroled on 28 May 1862. He was 23 years old. War records show a description of: 5'8", grey eyes, Fair Complexion, Dark Hair. He married first Ella Strothers (Struthers) (1849-1874) on 3 November 1866 in Keokuk, Lee County, Iowa. They had a son named Roy Gilbert (1867- ). He married second Emma Britton (1852- ), daughter of William (1826-1900) and Susana Darby (1823-1870) Britton, in 1877. They had eight children: Florence (Florance) Elarton (1879–1899) Clyde Howard Elarton (1880– ) Albina Allina S Allie Elarton (1880– ) Howard Asa "Ace" Elarton (1883–1954) Warren James Elarton (1886–1947) Mary W Elarton (1888–1915) Walter Charles Elarton (1889–1961) Lloyd (1894- ) Records for Jerial indicate his name is also spelled 'Elerton,' but his pension has 'Elarton.' Census and birh records of his children suggest he moved his family from Ohio to Iowa, to Kansas and back to Iowa. He was a Civil War Veteran who was missing in action for a time. (April 6, 1862, Shiloh, Tennessee.)
