Jerry Younger was born at Hoisington, Kansas, on September 30, 1933, the son of Martin and Anna (Lauber) Younger. He married Barbara Redman at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Emporia, on September 15, 1962. She survives at the home. Jerry Younger was born at Hoisington, Kansas, on September 30, 1933, the son of Martin and Anna (Lauber) Younger. He married Barbara Redman at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Emporia, on September 15, 1962. She survives at the home. Other family members include: sons, Steven Younger of Emporia and Douglas Younger of Pittsburg, Kansas; and sisters, Mary Ann Funk of Galatia, Kansas and Betty Shaver of Royce City, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Leonard, Paul and Albert; and a sister, Martina Luebbers. Jerry went to high school at Hoisington High and graduated from the Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia, where he received a Bachelor of Science in Business Degree (1960). Jerry served in the U.S. Navy on a minesweeper during the Korean War, having enlisted at age 17. He was a life-member of the American Legion – Post 5 (Emporia) and the Veterans of Foreign Wars – Post 7428 (Hoisington). He spent nearly 40 years as a fulltime accountant with Agler & Gaeddert, Bluestem Farm & Ranch Supply, and EVCO Wholesale Foods. He continued to work on a part-time basis, finally retiring for good from the Didde Catholic Campus Center in 2010. Jerry was active in numerous civic and charitable organizations. He served as Secretary of the Lyon County Fair Board, Treasurer of Lyon County Crimestoppers, and Treasurer of Camp Alexander. He was also active in Knights of Columbus – Council 727 in Emporia, and Hi-Noon Kiwanis Club, including a year as Lt. Governor for the Kansas Kiwanis District. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 A.M., Friday, September 9, 2011, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Services will be conducted by Father Rich Warsnak of the church, and Father Ray May of Didde Catholic Campus Center, Emporia. Interment will be at the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery with military detail honors by Ball-McColm Post #5, American Legion, and Lowry-Funston Post #1980 Veterans of Foreign Wars. The family will receive friends from 6:00 P.M. until the Rosary is recited at 7:00 P.M., Thursday evening, September 8, 2011, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Memorials have been established with the Sacred Heart Catholic Church Building Fund and the Emporia Public Library. Contributions may be sent in care of the funeral home.
