Jerry James Elman was born Sept. 5, 1899 in Buffalo Center, the son of Peter and Margaret Ukena Elman. He received his early education there. He also graduated from Capitol City Commercial college in Des Moines. Gladys Birum and Mr. Elman were united in marriage June 17, 1925 in Osage. He served as accountant for Birum Buick in its main office in Osage and branch offices in Mason City, Charles City and Stacyville, later buying the business from his late father-in-law, George Birum. He retired in 1956, selling the business to the late Jack Gladwin. Mr. Elman served in France in World War I, later becoming a member of American Legion Post 278 in Osage. Of this organization he was a past commander, was a member for 55 years, and was cited for his years of continuous service and membership. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, was a past president and member of Sunny Brae Country Club, and was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 102 for more than half a century. During World War II he served on the price and ration board, served in the Civilian Defense Corps and was chairman of the selective draft board. Surviving are his wife, Gladys; their adopted daughter, Barbara Birum Soukup of Dallas, Tex., and his son-in-law, Anthony C. Soukup; two brothers, Kors of Mesa, Ariz., and Raymond in Buffalo Center.
