Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church Chapel, with the Rev. Clark Christian officiating. Burial will be in Osage cemetery. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today at Champion Funeral Home, Osage. Gladys Elman was born April 12, 1899, in Waverly, the daughter of George and Cora (Stephens) Birum. She graduated from Osage High School in 1917 and Iowa State Teachers College in 1919. She taught school in Buffalo Center, Jefferson, Cedar Rapids and Osage. She married Jerry Elman of Buffalo Center in 1925. They made their home in Osage. She was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Church, a charter member of the Women's Society of Christian Service, a past member of the Organ Club of the church. She was a member for over 50 years of the Bethany Chapter of the Eastern Star, past president of the High School Band Mothers, served on the board of the Rainbow Girls and was a Girl Scout leader for eight years. She had served on the national board of the National Polio Foundation for 15 years, was county chairperson of the Christmas Seals, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and VFW Auxiliary, past member of the Shakespearean Club,Daughters of the American Colonists, Daughters of the American Revolution and Sunny Brae Country Club, Osage. Survivors include one adopted daughter, Mrs. A.C. Soukup, Malakoff, Texas; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jerry in 1975; one sister, Ellen; and one brother, Stephen. Mitchell County Press Osage, Iowa
