Alamosa Daily Courier - 05 October 1942 JESS JOHNSON DIES OF INJURIES RECEIVED IN FALL BENEATH TRAIN Funeral arrangements had not been announced at a late hour Monday for Jess Johnson, 57, who died early Monday morning from injuries received when he fell beneath a Denver and Rio Grande freight train at the State Avenue railroad crossing and was badly mangled. The accident occurred at 5:15 Sunday afternoon. The freight stood across the street intersection by the depot, and Johnson attempted to go between two of the cars by climbing over the coupling. At that moment, the train lurched as the crew started to break for the crossing. Johnson lost his hold and fell to the track. His left leg was crushed just below the knee, being nearly severed; while the right leg was crushed and mangled clear to the hip. At the Alamosa Community hospital, the amputations were completed and Johnson rallied well at first, but during the night severe shock set in and he died about 7 am. Coroner John Allardice said no inquest would be held. Johnson had been in downtown Alamosa and was returning to his home at 1012 Denver Avenue. The train was made up of standard gauge equipment which was being switched in the yards. The crew had stopped on number 3 track before the depot to permit another switching train to clear from the line ahead. It was decided to break for the crossing, and as the cars were pulled clear was when Johnson fell. The crew of the switching operation was composed of Ed Gaddis, engine foreman, Frank Lorimer, engineer, Ray Adkins, switchman, and H.E. Luster and Jack Turney, helpers. Johnson made no outcry as the wheels passed over him, and it was Gaddis who saw him being dragged and stopped the train. Adkins called a Lorton and Allardice Ambulance which took him to the hospital. He was conscious the entire time. Johnson has been employed at the Alamosa Flour Mills for over 20 years. he is survived by his wife, Ellen; four sisters, Mrs Cleve Rumsey and Mrs Eva Petty of Alamosa; Mrs Lute Vance and Mrs Etta Cunningham of La Jara; three brothers, Dave Johnson of La Jara; Laurence and Floyd Johnson of Denver; and 57 nephews and nieces. ____________________________________________________________ Alamosa Daily Courier - 06 October 1942 FUNERAL SERVICES JOHNSON ALAMOSA - Funeral services for Jess Johnson, 57, who died of injuries incurred when he slipped and fell between the cars of a moving freight train Sunday, will be held Wednesday at 2 pm at the Richfield LDS chapel. Interment will take place in the Sanford Cemetery under the direction of the Haynie mortuary.
