Johnson passed away at 8 o'clock Friday evening at his home in La Jara from injuries sustained when he fell from a wagon on which he was riding, when stricken with paralysis, while en route to the Johnson sawmill in Alamosa canon. William Calvin Johnson was born September 23, 1867 at Blue Earth, Minn. He came to Colorado in June 1888 and settled at Richfield. At that time, the valley was sparsely settled, and the vicinity of la Jara was desolate stretch of sage brush with a few buildings here and there. He was married November 29, 1888 to Mrs. Susan Clark at Richfield, and to this union was born ten children - five boys and five girls - three of who preceded him to the Great Beyond. The greater part of his life was spent in the timber sections of the valley, and he operated sawmills at various times. He sold his interest in the sawmill in Alamosa canon about a year ago on account of ill health and since had been making his home in La Jara. He was of a quiet and cheerful disposition and a great lover of little children; he was a kind and loving husband and father, and a good citizen, and had many friends throughout the valley. Deceased is survived by his widow, seven children, Jesse Johnson and Mrs. Raymond Petty of Alamosa; David Johnson and Mrs. Lute Vance of La Jara; Mrs. Jay Cunningham of Manassa; Lawrence Johnson of Bonanza and Floyd Johnson of Romeo; a step-daughter, Mrs. G.C. Rumsey of Casper, Wyo.; three brothers, Charles and Orlow of Idaho and David of Wilmer, Minn.; three sisters, Mrs. Lottie Conner of Esterville, Iowa, a sister in Los Angeles and a sister in Sioux Falls, S.D.; twenty grandchildren and one great grandchild, and a number of nephews and nieces. Funeral services were held Monday at 1 p.m. at the L.D.S. church in Richfield, the speakers being J. Nathan Shawcroft, J.P. Jensen and Bishop D. E. Shawcroft. The choir sang "Rock of Ages," "When I'm Gone You'll not Forget Me," "O My Father," and "Resurrection Day."
