BROWN, 76, longtime Rochester attorney and civic leader, died this morning at 9:30 o'clock at his residence south of the city following an illness of several months. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Thursday at the Zimmerman Family Funeral Home in Rochester. Private family rites will be held Friday, conducted by the Rev. John RAMSEY. Burial will be in the I.O.O.F. cemetery. Memorials may be made to Home Health Care of Woodlawn Hospital or to the church or charity of choice. Mr. Brown had practiced law in Rochester for 55 years, all the while taking prominent roles in many community service activities. A lifelong Rochester resident, he was the son, brother, father and uncle of attorneys-at-law. After gaduation from Rochester High School he earned his law degree at Indiana University in 1938 and returned here to join his father, Selden BROWN, in practice. A brother, Lawrence [BROWN], later joined the family firm, which after Selden's death, became Brown, Brown and Rakestraw. In 1981 Jesse joined his son, Rick [BROWN], to form a separate practice known as Brown and Brown where he remained active until shortly before his death. Mr. Brown's civic activities embraced a wide range of service. He was elected as prosecuting attorney early in his career, also serving as attorney for the county, for the Woodlawn Hospital board of trustees at its original location, for the hospital building association in construction of its new building, and as Rochester Township attorney during its consolidation of schools with the city. He was a charter member of First Federal Savings Bank's board of directors in 1966, retiring after 22 years in 1988. He also served the Fulton County Library Board as a trustee from 1969-80, and retired in 1989 after 25 years as a director of the Rochester Telephone Company. Born March 13, 1917 in Rochester, he was the son of Selden J. and Grace MIDDLETON BROWN. His marriage was March 20, 1938, in Indianapolis to Helen I. DAGUE, who survives. Mr. Brown was a member of the First Presbygterian Church, the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors and the National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association. He belonged to the American, Indiana and Fulton County Bar Associations and had been a member of the Elks Lodge, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. In World War II, he served as a bomber tail gunner wih the Naval Air Force in the Southwest Pacific theater. Also surviving are three daughters, Mrs. David (Joyce) MILLS, North Manchester; Mrs. David (Carol) WARNER and Mrs. Elizabeth (Beth) MIKESELL, both of Warsaw; two sons, Richard A. [BROWN], Rochester, and Walter J. [BROWN], Brownsburg; thirteen grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Lawrence M. [BROWN], Rochester, and Water J. [BROWN], Georgetown, S.C.; three sisters, Mrs. Clayton (Edith) NICHOLSON, Bayshore, N.Y.; Mrs. Conde (Ellamae) HOLLOWAY, Rochester, and Mrs. Robert (Grace) STOJANOVIC, Morgan Hill, Cal.
