BROWN, 83, of 2713 Barrett Road, Rochester, died at 2:28 p.m. Monday, Oct. 31, 2005, at Woodlawn Hospital, Rochester. Born on Sept. 5, 1922, in Rochester, he was the son of Selden J. and Grace (Middleton) Brown. As a young man, he earned the distinction of Eagle Scout. He attended Butler University until joining the U.S. Army during the Second World War. After completing his service, he attended Manchester College and graduated from Indiana University School of Law in 1949. He returned to Rochester and joined his father and brother, Jesse, in the practice of law. Over the course of the next half century, he also practiced with Frederick Rakestraw, his nephew Richard Brown, and his daughter Susan Brown until retirement in 1999. Mr. Brown was a member of the Fulton County Bar Association, the Indiana State Bar Association, Elks Lodge, Kiwanis, and the American Legion. He served as a director on the board of the First National Bank (now known as Wells Fargo Bank) and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. He was an avid fisherman and golfer. Survivors include Jean, his wife of 61 years, whom he married on May 5, 1944; daughter, Susan Brown, Rochester; daughter, Cathy and husband Doug Grogg, Rochester; granddaughter, Amy and husband Brian Severns, Rochester; granddaughter, Karrie Moore, Carmel; grandson, Michael and wife Tiffany Brown, New Orleans, La.; great-granddaughters, Dawn and Josie Brown, New Orleans, La.; brother, Walter J. Brown, Georgetown, S.C.; sister, Ellamae Holloway, Rochester; sister, Grace Stojanovic, Morgan Hills, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Jesse Brown; and sister, Edith Nicholson. A private graveside service took place at 2 p.m. today at the IOOF Cemetery, Rochester. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Music or Christian Education funds. Arrangements were made by Zimmerman Bros. Funeral Home, Rochester.
