Gustin, aged about twenty-five, an oil pumper employed on the Katherine Christie farm seven miles north of Hartford City near Dundee, was found dead Tuesday morning in his shanty on the oil lease, by Joseph Brown, a farmer who lives near by. Gustin was last seen alive Monday night about nine o'clock and when he was first found there was something of a mystery concerning the manner of his death. It was reported that he had suffocated from gas, but physicians declared that his death was due to heart trouble. The Gustin family lived at Keystone until a year ago when his father died and the family broke up housekeeping and he went to Dundee to live. He was unmarried. The funeral will be held at the Friends church at Keystone on Thursday afternoon at two o'clock and interment will occur in the cemetery there. About four o'clock Tuesday afternoon, Joseph Brown, who lives near Dundee, went to the boiler house on the Catherine Christie farm and found Jessie C. Gustin, the pumper laying on his bed, dead. No one had seen him since about nine o'clock Monday night when he left a neighboring lease, saying that he was going to his boiler house and go to bed, as he was in the habit of sleeping there. He had removed his shoes and laid down. The coroner gave it as his opinion that the man had died sometime Monday night of heart failure. The deseased was the son of Allen Gustin. and was born in Nottingham township, where he had lived until reaching his majority. He was single, 26 years, 10 months of age and leaves two sisters, two brothers and a stepmother. The funeral will he held at Keystone Thursday at 10:30 a. m. at the Friends church. Rev. Bluffton Banner – Dec 21, 1904 page 4 column The funeral of Jesse Gustin was held at Keystone Thursday. He was man who was found dead in an oil pumper’s house near Roll Tuesday. Since his remains were found the coroner has been conducting an investigation with the result that a verdict has been returned showing that Gustin came to his death from natural causes. It is said that the young man was subject to attacks of heart failure and that his death was due to an attack of this kind. There were absolutely no marks on the body that would indicate violence in any way. In his pockets was found something over $9 in change and noting about the house had been disturbed. Hartford City, Ind., Dec 15. – Another murder is believed to have been added to the already long list of sensational crimes, which have been committed in Blackford county within the last three months by the finding of E. C. Gustin, an oil pumper, on the Catherine Christie farm, seven miles north of here, dead and alone in his shack. The only supposition is that unless he was killed Gustin came to his death by asphyxiation from escaping gas. There were no marks on the body.
