Here is the modest obituary of a good citizen, a fine friend, a true husband and father, as prepared by himself: Jesse Dever was born April 22, 1844, in Jefferson County, Ohio, and died July 1, 1918. At the age of five years he, with his parents, moved to Buck Horn Creek, Tuscarawas County, Ohio. October 15, 1849, his mother died. In time his father remarried. To the first marriage seven children were born—William, Sarah Jane, Thomas, Jesse, John, Andrew W., and James. James died in infancy. In 1858, at the age of fourteen, he with the family moved from Ohio to Sullivan County, Indiana, where he resided until 1870. In 1870, he moved to Dickinson County, Kansas, where he homesteaded and resided there until 1883, when he moved to Clay County, where he resided until the time of his death. When the Civil War broke out William enlisted in the 2nd West Virginia Cavalry, Thomas in the 8th Illinois infantry, Father and Jesse in the 13th Indiana light artillery, John in the 97th Indiana infantry, and Andrew W. in the 13th Indiana light artillery. Father and Jesse each served three years and seven months. Andrew W. served one year and five months and was but seventeen years old at the close of the war. The father and five sons all returned home at the close of the war. While on furlough or leave of absence in the spring of 1863, he was married to Nancy A. Kelley. She died a little over two years after. To this union there were no children born. A few days before he was twenty-four years old, he was married to Mrs. Margaret Rachel Insley, who was twenty-three. To this union there were born two sons and three daughters—Christopher J., Jane C., Joseph M., Daisy D. and Jessie Margaret. The last named died at the age of two years and six months. On March 26, 1918, he and his wife, Margaret Rachel, celebrated their golden wedding. Before he was married the second time, he joined the Methodist Episcopal Church, to which he was loyal and doing his whole duty until the time of his death. During those years he met many discouragements, but by the help of his Savior and his good wife, he was able to meet them. During his residence in Kansas, he was justice of the peace about thirty years; postmaster seven years at Mont Cenie and seventeen years at Broughton, Kan.; station agent twenty-nine years at Broughton; and steward of the church over forty years, and he always has endeavored to be one of the citizens of his neighborhood that the public would be better by his living. He has always believed that man was put here for a nobler purpose than just to be born, live, and die.
