Read More	d/o JOHN BROWN & MARTHA BROWN Mrs. Jessie Carr Burgess, age 75, Reily Road, descendant of one of the pioneer families of Butler County and prominent for years in the business and civic affairs of the community, died Tuesday night in Mercy Hospital. Mrs. Burgess, the wife of Henry B. Burgess, had been ill the last four months. She was an investigator in the Butler County probate court for many years, and became interested in helping those less fortunate than herself. Then, when the 1913 flood brought destruction to this community, Mrs. Burgess donned hip boots and waded through the ruins of flooded districts of the city helping the National Guard and the Red Cross identify those whose lives were taken by the high waters. Mrs. Burgess operated the Carr Milling Company from the time of the death of her first husband, Barton Carr, in May 1924, until it closed its doors in 1940. She was a great granddaughter of Captain James Dick, one of the signers of the Ohio Constitution, who under instructions from General Anthony Wayne, was sent out from Camp Washington to the rescue of Fort Dunlap. She was born February 26, 1869 in Hamilton, daughter of the late Dr. John R. Brown and Martha Dick Brown, but upon the death of her mother, was sent to her maternal grandmother to be reared upon the Dick farms near Millville. The Dick farms were some of the original land grants in the community after the Revolutionary War. She married H. B. Burgess in July 1925, who assisted her in operating the Carr Milling Company. Besides the widower, she leaves one daughter, Mrs. Jack Datillo, Hamilton, and one grandson, Ronnie.
