Description	:	Jessie Frances Cordell of Watertown passed away on Wednesday, October 13, at the Estelline Care Center. Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 18 at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Name Catholic Church in Watertown with Fr. John Lantsberger officiating. Tim Ries will be the soloist accompanied by Jane Jaspers as organist. Burial will be at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Active Pallbearers will be her grandsons: Brad Cordell, Corey Cordell, Chris Cordell, Seth Cordell, Neil Cordell and Shawn Hemiller. Honorary Pallbearers will be all of her other grandchildren. Jessie Frances Gosmire was born on May 23, 1922 in Canova, SD to Arthur and Hattie (Kruscher) Gosmire. She grew up on the family farm west of Canova with her sister, Phyllis, and brothers, Howard (Doc) and Robert (Pete). She attended country school until moving to Howard, S.D. where she lived with her grandmother and attended high school. After graduating, Jessie attended St. Joseph's School of Nursing in Mitchell, SD where she earned her RN degree. After earning her degree, Jessie moved to Watertown, where she was employed at Luther Hospital and where she met her future husband, Martin Cordell. Martin was a patient at the hospital having been gored by a bull, and for both it was love at first sight. Jessie worked at Luther, Memorial and St. Ann's Hospitals over the course of 37 years. After her retirement, she worked as a supervisor at Benet Place where she thoroughly enjoyed caring for the Catholic sisters. On April 23, 1945, Jessie married Martin Peter Cordell at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Kranzburg, SD. To this union there were thirteen children. Jessie and Martin farmed east of Watertown for nearly 30 years. In the fall of 1975, they moved to their new home a few miles north of the old homestead where they resided until they moved into Watertown in the fall of 1996. Jessie was very involved in her church. She and Martin regularly attended daily mass and never missed a Sunday mass. Religion was a very big part of Jessie's life. Jessie also loved to play pinochle and marbles. She and Martin used to go dancing nearly every Saturday night. They also attended many polka fests over the years. Recently, Jessie volunteered to help say the rosary at Jenkins Living Center. She enjoyed visiting with the residents and looked forward to the Friday afternoon musical entertainment and coffee hour. Jessie also volunteered with Hospice. Jessie was very loving and compassionate and thoroughly enjoyed people. Her life revolved around her family and she was never happier than when she was surrounded by her grandchildren. Grandma's house was always the gathering place at holidays with lots of food, games and never ending hugs. Jessie was often found playing pinochle while on the phone with family members that did not make it home for the holidays. Survivors include Jessie's children, Ralph (Caroline) Cordell, Sioux Falls, SD; Edward (Vickie) Cordell, Stockton, CA; Kathleen Cordell, Northglenn, CO; John (Cathy) Cordell, Watertown, SD; Lucy (Larry) Hemiller, Modesto, CA; Paul Cordell (Joe Steiner), Arlington, SD; Stephen Cordell, Estelline, SD; Cecelia (Paul) Leiseth, Hazel, SD; Patricia (Monte) Kramer, Pierre, SD; Alvin (Sara) Cordell, Sioux Falls, SD; two daughters in-law: Sherry Cordell, Watertown, SD; Nancy Cordell, Sioux Falls, SD; two brothers, Howard and Robert Gosmire, Canova, SD. Jessie was fortunate to have shared her life and love with 41 grandchildren and 52 great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. She will join her beloved husband Martin, three sons, Andrew, Howard and Marty; her sister Phyllis Bauer, and granddaughter Deanne Teri in the Lord's house.
