She was born November 2, 1930 in King & Queen County to the late Joseph L. “Buddy” and Mattie Hurtt Walton. Jessie graduated as valedictorian from Pleasant Hill High School and was later appointed Justice of the Peace and Magistrate for the 9th Judicial District. She greatly enjoyed this job for 43 years and retired as the last magistrate in Virginia working out of her home. Mrs. Walton loved people. She especially loved the officers and individuals who came through her door through her magistrate work. She was always a rule follower, but never a judgmental lady. When the law required that she send someone to jail, she’d often cut them a slice of her homemade pound cake and share it with both the officer and the arrested individual before sending them out the door. It was her way of showing a little compassion to someone on what was probably not their best day. Mrs. Walton was a longtime marriage commissioner and a notary public for the Commonwealth of Virginia. She performed countless wedding ceremonies for couples over the years, many of them in her lovely living room. She was honored to perform the vows for all of her grandchildren’s weddings. Jessie’s walk with Jesus began early, as she was raised in a Christian home and was a lifelong member of Old Church United Methodist. She was blessed to serve in many capacities in the church she loved, including as a pianist, adult Sunday school teacher, member of the United Methodist Women, church treasurer and as a certified lay speaker for the Rappahannock District. Jessie was the secretary-treasurer of the Board of Directors and business manager of York Academy for 21 years. She was a past president of both the Woman’s Club of King & Queen County and the President’s Council of the Lee District Federation of Woman’s Clubs. She performed all of her roles with excellence. The books she kept were balanced to the penny, and every detail was attended to. Jessie had a great love for the Lord and her family. She was a devoted wife, loving mother and a doting “Grammy” to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a phenomenal cook and lovingly prepared home-cooked meals for family gatherings. Many fond memories were made around the table at Grammy’s famous Sunday evening family dinners. Her passion in life was her family. Nothing brought her more joy than being a wife, mother and grandmother. Jessie was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, John Moses Walton; two brothers, Joseph L. Walton, Jr. and Monroe Nelson Walton; and a great-granddaughter, Maren Eloise Norris. She is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Robyn and Chris Vincent of West Point, Beverly and Willard Norris, Jr. of Deltaville; six grandchildren and their spouses, Christopher and Jocelyn Vincent, Brad and Danielle Norris, Jonathan Norris, Benjamin and Amanda Vincent, Jessica and Chase Evans, and Ryan and Jeanne Norris; 12 great-grandchildren, Camryn and Cody Vincent, Ruby Kate, Molly and Lucy Vincent, June and Matilda Evans, Jon Daniel and Luke Norris, Ella and Matilyn Norris, and Jolie Norris; along with a sister-in-law, Lois Walton, whom she loved as a sister. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Monday in Old Church United Methodist Church Cemetery, 25614 The Trail, Mattaponi, VA 23110. A walk-through visitation will be held Noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at Vincent Funeral Home, 417 11th Street, West Point, VA. Memorials may be made to Old Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Joyce Goins, 145 Gregory Lane, Mattaponi, VA 23110. “Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his faithful servants.” Psalm 116:15.
