Mauch officiated and at 2:00 p.m., at Friedens Evangelical Church conducted by Rev. W. R. Wetzeler of Appleton, Wisconsin. Burial was in the Morgan Cemetery, rural Schleswig, Iowa. Joachim Hinrich Suckstorf was born March 20, 1838, in Vadersdorf, Island of Fehmarn, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, the son of Hinrich and Telsche (Kroger) Suckstorf. He married Louise Catharina Hofeldt on October 9, 1861, in Petersdorf, Fehmarn, Germany. Together, with their daughter, they sailed aboard the ship Palmerston, arriving in New York on June 6, 1868, and settled in Davenport. He used the name Henry during his lifetime. They moved to a farm near Durant, where he worked, until 1878, when they moved to Crawford County, where his father and other siblings were living. He purchased a farm and farmed for 12 years, until he purchased additional land where the town of Schleswig now stands. When the railroad came through the area, he sold his farm land to the Townsite Company, retaining only a small section where he made his home. When the town of Schleswig was plotted on the land he had sold, the desire was to name the new town Suckstorf, but he refused to accept this honor. Instead, he decided to name the new town Schleswig, in honor of his birthplace in Germany. Mr. and Mrs. Suckstorf, along with their daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. John Ehler, sailed to their homeland of Fehmarn, Germany, in 1907 for a four month visit with many family members. Louise preceded him in death on June 3, 1918. Surviving are two daughters, Wilhelmina (Lorenz) Petersen and Dorathea (John) Ehler; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two brothers, August Suckstorf of Schleswig and John Suckstorf of Bloomfield, NE. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, four brothers and four sisters. Schleswig Leader, Mar 10, 1927 Notes: Henry has the name Heinrich on his gravestone. The surname Suchsdorf became Sucksdorf and Suckstorf in the United States.
