Emma Dorathea Suckstorf was born April 25, 1869, in Davenport, Iowa, the daughter of Joachim and Louise (Hofeldt) Suckstorf and was baptized as a child. She moved with her family to a farm in Crawford County in 1876, which was mostly open prairie area, 25 years before the town of Schleswig was founded. She used the name Dora during her lifetime. She was married Johannes "John" Ehler on September 27, 1889, at the Grant Township Lutheran Church. Two sons and three daughters were born to this union. After spending the first two years of their married life on the old Suckstorf farm, they moved to Ida County, where they farmed for eight years. In 1890, when the town of Schleswig was founded, they moved to Schleswig to make their home. Mr. and Mrs. Ehler, along with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Suckstorf, sailed to their homeland of Fehmarn, Germany, in 1907 for a four month visit with many family members. In 1915, the couple toured the West. John preceded her in death on May 8, 1928. In 1926, Dora lost the sight of one of her eyes and in 1936, lost the sight of the other eye and for the past nine years, has been totally blind. During the first several years she made her home with her daughter, Edna Johns, and later with another daughter, Clara Maas. During those years, she spend her time with hand work and helping where she could around the house. She always tried to be cheerful in spite of her physical handicaps. She was a member of the Friedens Church in Schleswig and attended when she could. She always looked forward to receiving Holy Communion in her home and was privileged to partake of this Sacrament last Friday afternoon. She was also an active member of the Women's Union. She was a devoted mother and a good neighbor and friend. She will be missed by all who knew her. With her passing, Schleswig bids farewell to one of its last pioneers. Surviving are two daughters, Clara Maas and Edna (Lawrence) Johns, both of Schleswig; one son, Edward (Leona) Ehler of Schleswig; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, an infant daughter, one son, Louie Ehler, one son-in-law, Emil Maas and one sister, Wilhelmina Petersen. Greenwald and Mrs. Elmer Jessen, all of Battle Creek, Mr. and Mrs. John Ehler, Mrs. Katherine Harding, Mr. and Mrs. Jensen, Mr. and Mrs. Martin Ehler, Henry Ehler, Hugo Ehler and Mr. and Mrs. Walter Bugge, all of Ida Grove, Fred Petersen of Arthur and Mr. and Mrs. Harwin Jess of Charter Oak.
