Read More	The Nelson Gazette (Nelson, NE), Thursday, January 15, 2009 Joe Jay Langer, the son of Glen "Pidge" Walter and Frieda Grace (Harkins) Langer, was born on December 12, 1947 at Superior, Nebraska. He passed away on December 30, 2008 at the St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford, Illinois at the age of 61 years and 18 days. Joe graduated from Superior High School. He attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln where he earned his bachelors degree and furthered his education, receiving his Masters at Frostburg State College, Frostburg, Maryland in Management. He was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church in Madison, Wisconsin. On December 21, 1968, he was united in marriage to Kathleen Elizabeth Braye at the United Methodist Church in Superior, Nebraska and to this union two children were born, Matthew and Trista. He entered into the United States Army on June 18, 1970 and retired with the rank of Major on June 30, 1990. During his military service he received the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the National Defense Service Medal, the Humanitarian Service Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the Army Commendation Medal earning 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Meritorious Service Medal earning 3 Oak Leaf Clusters. After his military service he was Deputy Commander for the Administration U.S. Army Medical Material Center in Europe, Pirmasens, Germany where he earned the U.S. Army Order of Military Medical Merit, the Commanders Award for Civilian Service and the Expert Field Medical Badge as a civilian. During Joe's lifetime he lived in several communities, Landstahl, Germany, Kleinstein Hausen, Germany, Pirmasens, Germany, Vicenza, Italy, Ft. Lewis, Washington, Ft. Detrick, Maryland, Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, Ft. Richardson, Alaska, Ft. Sam Houston, Texas, Walkersville, Maryland, Lincoln, Nebraska and Superior, Nebraska. Joe was a member of the Ramstein Golf Course, and the Ramstein Officer's Club, he was a Boy Scout leader and supported the Fisher House Foundation. Joe loved to golf, any season, any location. He had the pleasure and experience as many great golfers, to play at St. Andrews golf course in Scotland. He was preceded in death by his parents, Glen and Frieda Langer. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen of Middleton, Wisconsin, son, Matthew Langer and daughter Trista Langer both of Middleton, Wisconsin. He is also survived by his sister, DeVee Smalley of Superior, Nebraska and her family; Debra Smalley, Deon Smalley and Cecil and Audrey Smalley, Donnie and Betty Kay, sister, Crystal Marker of Tecumseh, Nebraska and her family Julie and Dan Holgate, Jared and Bryan Holgate, John and Brenda Ahrens, Kalyn and Jansen Ahrens, Ayme and Scott Gerber, Bill and Jacqueline Baird and Kaita, sister, Frona Wall of Hastings, Nebraska and her family, Jeff and Karen Wall, Jacob and Joshua Wall, Randy and Michelle Wall, Ryan and Angie, sister, Judy Schott and Husband Alvin of Nelson, Nebraska and her family, Sandra and Ron Schendt, Lance and Deidre Schendt, Susan and Cameron Trombley, Sheri and Art Watts, Camron, Travis and Alyssa, brother, Stephen Langer and wife Janice Lee of Upton, Wyoming, and his family Ross and Misty Langer, Camille and Savannah, Clint and Jill Langer, Gail and Shane Lee and Katelyn. Sister-in-law, Shirley Swanstrom of Sidney, Nebraska and her family, Nick and Cheri Swanstrom, Kitska and Alicia, David and Marsha Swanstrom, Pam and Bob Kerns and Brent and Jacob Wilderman. Brother-in-law, Larry and Connie Braye of Arvada, Colorado and his family, Tammy and Greg Garner, Tyler, Tanner and Kenzi and Wendy and Nick Davies. He is also survived by his aunt, Pauline Harkins of Superior, Nebraska, and uncles, Jerry and Gloria Harkins of Cortez, Colorado and Butler Harkins of Oxnard, California along with numerous other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 10, 2009 from the Megrue-Price Funeral Home Chapel in Superior, with Pastor David Johnson officiating. The eulogy was given by (COL., 06 RET.) Jettaka Alexander, (BRIG. Gen. RET.) Richard L. Ursone and Debra Smalley. Music was "A New Star Up In Heaven Tonight" and "The Impossible Dream," with Stephanie Thayer as soloist and Carlita Erickson as organist. Pallbearers were Rex Kirchhoff, Ron Alexander, John Ahrens, Cecil Smalley, Jeffrey Wall and Randall Wall. Honorary Pallbearers were Stephen Langer, Larry Braye, Alvin Schott, Marvin Smidt, Ross Langer and Clint Langer. Interment with Full Military Rites and "61" balloon release - signifying Joe's life and age was in the Evergreen Cemetery at Superior, Nebraska. In lieu of flowers the Langer family requests consideration of a donation to the Joe Langer Research Fund in care of Kathleen Langer, 8570 Greenway Blvd. #306, Middleton, WI 53562.
