Description	:	Joe Wheeler Parsons, 96, of Rt. 1, Galax, died Sunday, February 19, 1995, at his home. Mr. Parsons was born September 18, 1898, in Independence. On December 1, 1924, he was married to Virginia Phipps. They had one son, John Wheeler Parsons. Joe attended Virginia Military Institute and Roanoke College and was a Sergeant in the United States Army during World War I. Read More	Joe Wheeler Parsons, 96, of Rt. 1, Galax, died Sunday, February 19, 1995, at his home. Mr. Parsons was born September 18, 1898, in Independence. On December 1, 1924, he was married to Virginia Phipps. They had one son, John Wheeler Parsons. Joe attended Virginia Military Institute and Roanoke College and was a Sergeant in the United States Army during World War I. He was elected Clerk of the Circuit Court of Grayson County in 1928 and held this office for 32 years. Mr. Parsons was admitted to the Virginia State Bar in 1931. He was active in the Republican Party for many years and was chairman of the party in Grayson County and the Fifth Congressional District. He attended five national Republican presidential conventions and was chairman of the Virginia Delegation in 1956. In 1953 and in 1957, he managed the gubernatorial campaigns of Ted Dalton. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the First National Bank of Galax and its successor banks for 59 years. From 1946 through 1993, he managed Parsons Auction Company, which had been started by his father, John May Parsons, around 1915. Mr. Parsons was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Galax and various civic and fraternal organizations. Surviving are his wife, Virginia Phipps Parsons; son and daughter-in-law, John W. and Jerry Parsons, Independence; granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Susan and Mark Fackrell, Galax; two great-grandchildren, Matthew and Ashley Fackrell. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the First United Methodist Church with interment to follow in the Independence Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Baywood Rescue Squad or the First United Methodist Church of Galax. Arrangements by Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home, Galax.
