Description	:	Brother Joel Benham, the subject of this sketch, was born in Greene County, Indiana, March 23, 1849, and died at his home in Washington Township, in said county, October 8, 1899. He was united in marriage with Miss Samantha F. Hicks in the year 1871. To their union were born seven children, two sons and five daughters, all of whom with their mother live to mourn his loss save one, who died in infancy. Read More	Brother Joel Benham, the subject of this sketch, was born in Greene County, Indiana, March 23, 1849, and died at his home in Washington Township, in said county, October 8, 1899. He was united in marriage with Miss Samantha F. Hicks in the year 1871. To their union were born seven children, two sons and five daughters, all of whom with their mother live to mourn his loss save one, who died in infancy. He became a member of the Methodist Episcopal church at Simpson chapel in the eighteenth year, and remained a faithful member until death. Brother Benham was a firm Methodist and was well versed in the doctrines and policy of the church. He was a man of deep principle and had the courage of his convictions to speak what he believed to be right. He was especially opposed to the saloon and to all forms of intemperance, and did everything he could to rid the community of all such vices. He had the esteem and confidence of all who knew him, and his worth as a citizen is known the county over. But the worth of his life and spirit was most seen and appreciated in his home and to the church. He loved his home and with his patience ruled faithfully and well. In his home he delighted to greet and entertain his friends and rarely could one go out from his presence without being impressed with the singleness of his purpose and the strength of his character. He was happy in all church duties and services, and was never more at himself than when before his Sunday-school class, to which he taught the Word of Life. He was indeed "A workman that preaches not to be ashamed, rightly divining the words of truth." His illness was of a lingering and serious nature, yet he bore it with Christian fortitude and with implicit faith in God; said, we must take it as it comes; we must bear it with heroic faith. And with such a faith he closed his eyes in the scenes of earth on the evening of October 7, and slept as peacefully as a babe on the mother's breast until 1:10 a.m., when he opened his eyes again to the beauties of the eternal state. In life he was successful, in death triumphant. In his death his family has sustained the loss of a devoted husband and an indulgent father, while the church bids farewell to an ardent worker and to a useful supporter of all her interests. But we sorrow not as others, which have no hope, for ere long we expect to strike glad hands with him on the sunny banks of sweet deliverance. His remains were followed by a large concourse of relatives, friends, and neighbors to Prairie Chapel where his pastor conducted the services after which his body was consigned to earth to await the call of the resurrection morn."
