LAWRENCE - A rural St. Lawrence youth was killed about noon Sunday when a shotgun accidentally discharged and struck him in the side. According to the Hand County sheriff, Joel Fanning, 17, of rural st. Lawrence, was hunting with a family party on the farm of his parents Mr. and Mrs. Jack Fanning, Jr. six miles northeast of St. Lawrence when the shotgun accidentally discharged The sheriff said that young Fanning was dead on arrival at the Hand County Memorial Hospital in Miller. The sheriff and conservation officer investigated the shooting. L.J. Dudek officiating. Burial will be in St. Ann's cemetery. A rosary will be recited Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Joel Fanning was born Oct. 7, 1956 at Huron to Mr. and Mrs. Jack Fanning Jr., St. Lawrence. He was a student at Miller High School. Survivors include his parents; one sister, Mrs. Gene (Marlene) Gentile, New York, N.Y.; five brothers, John, Denver, and Gerald, Jeffrey, Randy and Jay, all at home; tow grandmothers, Mrs. Jessie Fanning and Mrs. Mary Beaner both of St. Lawrence. He was preceded in death by one brother and both grandfathers. Pallbearers will be Dennis Taylor Wayne Ruhnke, Kent Alarie, Jerry Alumbaugh, Jeff Wipf and Brad Wentzlaff.
