CLING ON TUESDAY PASSED AWAY AT THE AGE OF 76 Last Friday morning, December 22nd, the Dayton community was greatly saddened to hear of the death of J. A. Cling. It was not unexpected, but the time was closer at hand than most thought. He had been in poor health for some time, suffering from a throat ailment which proved fatal. He was well liked by everyone, and his place in the community will not be easy to fill. During his lifetime spent in Dayton there were very few things done in which he did not have a hand. His was a very active life. He served his family, church and neighbors well. He was 76 years of age. As we look back over the facts of his life we find many things of interest, and almost a record of service. He had been Treasurer of the Emanuel Lutheran Church for about 38 years. He had never missed a Christmas Morning Service in his life, being taken there by his parents when a baby. He was born on a farm south of town where Charles Peterson now lives. He had served on the School Board for at least six years, was elected President for three years, holding that position when the new High School Building was erected. Also on the Town Council for about 10 years. He served Dayton Township as Clerk for about 15 years, and had been chairman of the Board of Directors of the Dayton Municipal Light Plant since the beginning of that board about 5 years ago. Mr. Cling had been Fire Chief in Dayton for many years, as long as we can remember, until 1937 when he declined further service on account of age and poor health. He was Secretary of the Scandinavian Mutual Insurance Association 15 years, and was still Secretary at the time of his death. All through these years of community service he was operating the Dayton Lumber Yard. For 42 years he had sold lumber to the people of Dayton, retiring from that job during the past year when the lumber company was sold to Vic Hansen of Lehigh. Can that record of service be equalled by anyone? Dayton Review January 4, 1945 OBITUARY Johan August Cling, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Olson was born near Dayton, Iowa, Dec. 13, 1868. His father passed away while he was an infant. Later his mother married Mr. Carl J. Cling, who became his foster father. By Holy Baptism he was received into our Lutheran Church of Dayton, being one of the first children to be baptized in the newly organized congregation. He was confirmed June 1, 1884. On Sept. 28, 1898 he was united in marriage to Miss Ida Sofia Thorne. Three sons were born to this union, Francis, Carl and Everett. Mrs. Cling passed away Nov. 21, 1930 and Carl Dec. 2, 1941. In 1902 Mr. Cling was elected trustee of our congregation, a position which he still held at the time of his death. At the death of Mr. C. G. Anderson, who was his predecessor, Mr. Cling was chosen treasurer of the church and as such he served faithfully until the beginning of this year when he declined re-election. Mr. Cling also held various positions of trust in the town of Dayton such as Township Clerk, Council, School Board Member, Fire Chief, etc. He was in the lumber business for over forty years. He was also in the insurance business. He passed away last Friday morning, Dec. 22, 1944 at the age of 76 years and 9 days. He is survived and mourned by his sons Francis and Everett Cling and their families, the former of Stanton, Iowa, and the latter of Dayton, and by two sisters, Mrs. Anna Ehen of Dayton and Mrs. Lottie Erickson of Minneapolis, Minn., and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held from the Lutheran Church on Tuesday, Dec. 26, 1944. Pastor Waldo Ekeberg delivered the message. A quartet consisting of Mrs. B.I. Lundberg, Miss Hilma Johnson, Mr. Frank E. Peterson and Mr. Waldemar Ekeberg sang "Some Blessed Day," and "There's a Land that is Fairer than Day." Interment took place in Dayton cemetery. Peace to his memory.
