Weiland John Bartels was born on July 19, 1839, in Ludwigslust, Mecklenburg, Germany. At the age of 14 he came with his parents to America, locating in Clayton county, Iowa. On November 15, 1864, he enlisted in Co A, 8th Iowa Vol Reg, and was a soldier until Dec. 2, 1865, when he came back to Iowa. On June 15, 1866, he was married to Dora Milkie. In 1870 he came with his family to Seward county and took a homestead on which he lived until the time of his death. He was 75 years, 4 months and 9 days of age. He joined the German Lutheran church at the early age of fourteen. His death was a very peaceful one and he had the continual care of his family. He was a kind father and was always ready to aid his family and his friends. He leaves to mourn his death four sons, one son and his wife having preceded him to the great beyond years ago. Four daughters-in-law and thirteen grandchildren, besides an innumerable number of nieces and nephews and friends also survive him. Funeral services were held from the German Lutheran church Friday afternoon conducted by Rev. Schorman with interment in the Staplehurst cemetery. The pallbearers were Herman Kamprath, Edward Kamprath, Herman Meyer, Wm. Meyer, E. Jacobs and Christ Schaal.
