Henry had three sisters: Maria Elizabeth born on December 26, 1827, Maria Ad. born on January 12, 1831, and Maria Anna born on July 16, 1834. He had one brother, Gerhard Henrich, who was born on May 12, 1832 and died a year later on July 1, 1833. Henry very much wanted to come to America. As it turned out, he would try three times before he would be able to realize his dream. The first time his money was saved up, his brother-in-law died. He generously gave the money to his sister to pay for the funeral expenses. He again worked and saved his money to come to America. Then another sister's child died and, again, he gave the money to his sister for her child's funeral expenses. The third times a charm...Henry saved the third time and came to America. His port of entry was New York City. From the 1910 Census Records we know that Henry immigrated to America in 1864 and was never naturalized as a citizen. In New York, Henry met a girl named Sabina Rowe and fell in love. He and Sabina were married and headed west. They were married less than a year when Sabina died of Typhoid fever. They had no children. Sabina is buried in a little town just over the Missouri border. For reasons unknown, probably farmwork, Henry eventually landed in Ottumwa, Iowa. The priest in Ottumwa introduced him to Anna Graver and was instrumental in bringing the two together. Henry was 18 years older than Anna so he may have needed a priest's intervention to convince Anna's parents to allow the courtship. Anna Graver was born to Henry and Margaret Graver in New York City on November 9, 1856. At the age of nine she came with her parents to Keokuk, Iowa. They lived in Keokuk until she was eighteen years of age at which time they moved to Ottumwa, Iowa. Henry and Margaret are buried in the Neola Cemetary and the information on their tombstones is all we have on them. Henry married Anna in Ottumwa Iowa in 1876. For a year they made their home Fremont County and then they moved to Council Bluffs where they lived for another year. In 1878, they moved to a farm that was in the Neola area, but technically in Minden Township. Henry helped build St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Neola, Iowa, in 1888. The cornerstone of the church was laid July 25, 1888. Henry sent for two nephews and one niece from Germany: Henry Overberg (Anna Elizabeth's son), Joe aus dem Moore (Maria Anna's son), and Wilemennia "Minnie" Meyer (Maria Ad.'s daughter). Minnie started out living with a relative in another state who sent her to Henry to raise because she was "wild." Annie (Wellman) Adams said that she probably said darn, which labeled her as "wild." Henry got Minnie a job keeping house for Old Antoine Fisher. Antoine had lost his first wife to Typhoid fever in 1867. He had two children with her: Frank and Kate (Kate died at age 20). Antoine remarried and he and his new wife had two little girls: Elisabeth and Mary (Mary died at age 18). It was Minnie's job to care for the girls. Well, Minnie Meyer ended up marrying Old Antoine's son, Frank Fisher. Then Henry's nephew, Joe Ausdemore, married Old Antoine's daughter, Elizabeth Fisher. This is how the Wellman's are related to the Ausdemores and Fischers. Henry and Anna raised eight children and lived long lives. Both died and are buried in Neola, Iowa. On their tombstones all you will find listed is a large stone with "Wellman" and two smaller stones with "Mother" and "Father" along with the years of birth and death.
